Ok, I have the lowdown on the update to FCP.

The FCP update to version 5.1.2 will be available for free download from apple in the next 30 days.

The biggest news is in supported formats:
Full, native support for 24p and 25p in HDV from JVC, & Canon (don't know about sony), and in DVCPRO-HD from Panasonic.
There's also improved XDcam support for Sony.
There is still NO support for 720/50p ... which is a huge shame for Europe, especially as the EBU (European Broadcasting Eunion) is coming to the consus here at IBC that Interlaced is dyign rapidly as a production format and 720/50p will be the prevailing format. The rep I spoke to is on the development team for FCP and is very aware of the issue and feels teh same way about it as I do. However she of course coudl not comme on any furutr products or scehdules more than "After this relse becomes available" - so at least 31 days! :)

Other improvements include a totally new import system for P2 (HORAY!).
it's similar to the capture window, except that it's designed for a file, not tape based, system.
It also features background ingestion during logging. As you select and preview clips, you can be allready copying them into FCP in the background - big timesaver.
I didn't get a cahcne to use it, but it looked very slick.

There's also other small improvements such as real time scopes in all playback fromats.
Pre, post, singluar and batch gama correction for still images. Great when you are importing from a format with mismatching gamma.
There's also Motion FX-Plug integration within the project and other small fixes like imporved multicam mode.

Apparently the LA FCP user group has information online.

I have a couple of photos of the "quick presets" menu showing all teh native suported formats too. I'll get them up here shortly.

On a personal note: I haven't really ever considered FCP to be that mcuh better than Premiere. I think Adobe has a lot of catching up to do at the moment.

Very very nice, that P2 thingy is pretty pretty pretty prettttyyyy...pretty good! Getting a tad excited. Be nice to get the update before i begin to edit the horror fest thingamajig!

It is a great leap forward for (USA) P2 users. The interface is very slick and nicely integrated, they learned a lot from P2Log <g>.

Though I have to say, if I were Apple I would have spent my resources on addressing the fundamental issues of supporting *every* video format first.

After all, they're core business is editing...

(Oh, BTW, they do have Sony MXF support via a "third party" plug in.)

I notice there's no DVCPRO NTSC in that list.

Actually, Apple's "core buisness" is the iPod+iTunes venture.

Yikes! And my Nano died after one month (no longer recognized inside iTunes and won't play anything), and my son's mini after just one year.
