EVF auto off mode

Am I correct in understanding that the only settings for rear screen and evf are "auto" meaning the rear screen shuts off when anything is near the evf, OR evf is always on while rear screen is always off OR rear screen is always on while evf is always off?

That's infuriating. Having the screen shut off like that is très stupid. Can't hold the camera in any way that would make that screen shut off to get a shot, which happens to me all the time.

I'm not really sure what you mean...they gave us every option there could possibly be...auto, on, or off.

Many people assign a button (in modern cameras) to switch back-and-forth between the LCD and EVF when necessary, but most video people use one or the other and aren't constantly switching back and forth between them.

Im not sure I can help for a sony cam (which you dont mention the model of)

Yes, support the cam against your 'gut' for a low shot and the screen turns off - infuriating - you are not alone there in finding this to be a winner of the 'designed by idiots' prize.

My canon (r6) I have the assigned button for screen or VF

50% of my shots are gutcam and 50% at eye level so Im swapping all the time. Typically 24 and gut height and 105 at eye height.

The only hope is this. which might work.

Set to screen 'always on' and see if it defaults to vf when the screen is shut

That is a setting I seem to have happened upon when using my canon and might with investigation save the assigned button.

so keep the screen shut for vf work and when you want to use the screen open it

I have checked this is how my canon r6 works and will be updating my shooting procedures accordingly and now that assigned button is free for something else.

Its sad that in this world I have to develop 'shooting procedures' to make the digicam work properly. Gone are the days of three dials to change three things, which I understand.

My development of 'shooting procedures' is enough to keep me on canon however strong the alsternatives are.

That’s how I handle it on my Sony. Set a custom button to manually toggle between the two. I don’t often use the viewfinder but it’s easy to trigger in the normal operation when reaching for the controls on the back of the camera. To be fair I had to disabled auto switching on my camcorder so this isn’t strictly a hybrid issue.

A7RIV, and thanks, I'll try that. Definitely a terrible design.
