Criminal Record Check for Crew?

[Imaginate]

Does anyone have any experience working on sets with kids and being required to do a criminal record check? Is that common or not?

I've seen craigslist ad for school photo assistant jobs, that indicate a background check is required. These days, I would not be astonished if such was required for other situations where 'children may be present'.

But keep in mind that in order to do a criminal background check, they need your social security number and other sensitive data. A gold mine for identity thieves. If you proceed, do so with caution.

For a short film I directed recently the facility that was used, required the crew and cast to have a 'quick' check, that is for outstanding warrants or the like. But we had all met several times, so it was not like sending an email to a craigslist ad...

But for a craigslist ad, I'd wait until the production was proved to be legitimate beyond reasonable doubt...

As for the general 'background check'... in San Diego strippers need to obtain a permit to dance, which includes a check for outstanding warrants as well as prior convictions for 'industrial sex crimes'...

Browze Bizparentz.org for any regulations relating to child performers both in the US and Canada. Recently some legislation in Calif may have required some background checks for anyone working with child performers such as photographers and such.
