CC'ing with photoshop

so if one where to do CC'ing with photoshop, would you export a "filmstrip" out of premier, import it in to PS, colour correct, export that again as a filmstrip, import it in to premier and continue editing?

is that common? does the res. hold up? do you lose any image quality doing this?

thanks in advance!

Whenever I use photoshop I export individual tif files, and run a batch. I'm not a big fan of the .flm format as you can only do a set number of frames at a time.

So far, I've not been impressed with CC'ing footage in Photoshop. On the short that Waltind and I just worked on together, even if he didn't CC, and was only using it for masking, when he exported back out, the images were lighter than the original.

Make a new Action by recording the steps you took to color correct (usually by saving a custom Levels or Curves and making the Action apply it)

Go to File > Automate > Batch and choose the folder and that Action. Done. :)

If the frames come out lighter out of Photoshop then maybe it has done a colorspace conversion on those files unasked, or you did not notice of being asked...

Why use a stills editor when most corrections can be done no-hassle in Premiere, Avid, FCP etc?

Because more people are comfortable working in Photoshop, and since you can batch process, it can be a likeable albiet timely workaround.

Also, you can use layers to effect color (usually multiply or soft light, etc.) to get effects that I haven't been able to achieve using just curves or color balance.

In Vegas, I couldn't replicate a CC I did in Photoshop that used a multiply layer....but that could be because it's Vegas or *gasp* because I suck. ;)

Nahh, not sause you suck. Vegas is a great app, but it is lacking in the blending modes you can use. Those make a huge difference for much of what I do.

Oh, that's comforting. :) I'm guessing something like Combustion (god awful interface though), FCP, After Effects, or Shake ($$$$$) would be much better. :)

You can get those Layer Effects in AE. But I still think Photoshop is amazing for CC. There is no substitute for Curves in LAB Mode. I'm using Color Finesse in AE, but there's no Curves interface in YCbCr. (YCbCr separates Lightness from Color.) Color Finesse is good, but I want Curves in every color space.

Avid has curves.

I'm with you PJC, I've just started using PS for color correction and the amount of control over the image is unbelievable.

It's just a pain when you have an entire sequence needing correction. Very tedious.

Curves in every color space? And is that in every version of Avid? I've seen the interface in "Symphony" and it is amazing.

Yep, you'd figure ole Pshop would be the model for all CC. Leaving out Curves in relation to Luma is just plain mean.:(

yeah, RGB, R, G, and B curves. its even available in Xpess Pro.

I hear ya PJC! Interestingly even higher end stuff doens't have this functionality. Really weird. It can be done in AE though via a workaround. Simply duplicate your footage make the curves adjustments to the upper layer and then set its blending mode to luminance. Should work fine.
