Casting, but you don't have funding yet?

Is this normal? I'm watching a production going on nearby, where they are already casting the film but I know they don't have funding secured yet. Isn't this sort of jumping the gun?

The director asked to borrow some gear from me because they didn't have anything to film the auditions with.. seems odd to me.

Sometimes showing you have good actors to work with can help secure funding, and if you have the right group of people you may be able to make a trailer or something similar to help sell the concept. So no, it's not unheard of. However, they should have something to start with. If they can't even manage to get a camera on their own it may qualify as jumping the gun. It really depends on how they explain it to the actors.

It's more common, but it also falls through a lot more. Anyone can decide to hold auditions for their super awesome movie, so most people do... but it's a lot harder to find funding, so the movie never actually materializes. You're actually comparing people who WANT to make a movie to people who ARE MAKING a movie, and the former is much easier than the latter.

I can't quite figure out the psychology on this one. I think it's either "Once we get actors we'll be able to get funding," but I suspect there's a lot more of "Yeah, I'm a director, we totally got actors for this movie we're going to shoot!"

On the other hand, yeah, sometimes getting the actors get you funding, and every now and then the movie goes through. So there ya go.

Common enough, and not necessarily a bad thing. i just hope they're telling the aspiring actors though :(

I've done this. Don't recommend it. Our concept for a film didn't work out or should I say the funding. The movie didn't end up materializing.

The only thing that matters is "What do YOU do?"
