C-Log Coming to the Canon 5D IV

Which one is Keith? I thought his name is Craig?

Oups, sorry... you're right.. I'm mixing the name up with Keith from Northlight Images. I don't know them personally and almost never refer to them by name... got the names crossed!

Craig is the one writing for Canonrumors! *Make mental note: C for CR*

The rumour is growing and gaining more features:

Firmware update will bring C-Log
We have told your earlier that Canon will bring c-log support to Canon5D Mark IV camera via firmware update that is expected to be announced next month during NAB event. A bunch of new features also coming just take a look below.

Firmware update and list of improvements coming
Now just prior to the announcement of Canon 5D Mark IV firmware update we now have all the details improvement that is expected to arrive with the Canon 5D Mark IV camera.

All video output will still be 8-bit.
Sampling for DCI 4K will be increased to a 5632 x 2970 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.27x Crop factor.
Sampling for UHD will be from a 5472 x 3078 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.29x Crop factor.
Both modes are accurately down-sampled to their final resolutions.
Existing frame rates will remain the same.
The current 1:1 4K sampling mode will remain an option for situations benefiting from the 1.78x Crop factor.
There will also be new full-sensor 3K modes added including 60fps and HDR 24fps.Both will use a line-alternating sampling method, so quality will be inferior to the improved 4K format (but better than the existing FullHD 1080p format.) It is unclear whether the file resolution in the final firmware will be the full 3360 x 1890 format or down-sampled to 3072 x 1728.
FullHD 1080p will also use this 3K full-sensor mode with down-sampling for a noticeable improvement in perceived resolution.
FullHD 1080p will also receive a modest frame rate boost to 72/75fps.
The EOS 5D Mark IV will gain the XF-AVC file format at 120Mbps (4:2:0) and 200Mbps (4:2:2). Both formats should require low enough data rates to accommodate UHS-I U3 type SD Cards.
Reports relating to a possible service job for the 5D Mark IV are the result of the heat sinks on current units not performing well in some environments when used with the newer firmware. This is because of the increased processing load from the enlarged video sampling area. Newer units will ship with an improved heat sink while existing 5D Mark IV units can be retrofitted. Pricing is unconfirmed for that servicing.
The newer firmware will still work in non-serviced cameras, but this may result in premature temperature warnings.

FWIW, GH5 is offering a greater crop mode for a greater reach - i.e., a 8.8 MPX center crop of GH4 instead of a full sensor readout of the GH5, kind of like 5D MKIV in reverse. Matt Allard has the clip on Newshooter.

Canon recently updated the c700 and seeing some of the additions give validity to the proposed additions to the 5D Mark IV

Interesting observation...I haven't followed the C300 Mark II updates and if it ever received any crops where this would be more of standard update then...but nevertheless.

Well, the 5D Mark IV will receive the C-Log, but the rest was fake. Some people here called it...I totally believed it, lol.

"We first reported that the EOS 5D Mark IV would get a C-Log update last month, and a few days later a more indepth upgrade list came from an unknown source. It looks like the detailed firmware specifications list from a “new source” was a nice and detailed hoax. We very rarely get caught but them, but we were this time. As has been the case in the past, if anything is extremely detailed as far as a rumor goes, it’s likely not legitimate.

Apologies if we got people’s hopes up, but everything we post isn’t always 100% correct."

I guess nothing for the 1DX Mark II?

No mention of it anywhere.. Hopefully it comes down the pipe... One would think that if the 5d mark iv gets log the 1dx mark ii does as well, but who knows...

Here's a note from Canon about the image quality when shooting in C-Log:

"When Canon Log is set, horizontal noise stripes may appear in movies depending on subject or shooting conditions. It is recommended to shoot a few test movies and check before the actual shooting. Note that noise may become more noticeable especially when you apply strong contrast during color grading of the shot movie.

Horizontal noise stripes tend to appear when the subject is dark and flat or [Peripheral illum.] is set to [Enable]. This noise may also appear when ISO speed is relatively low, such as at ISO 400.

When the noise is noticeable, it is recommended to set [Peripheral illum.] to [Disable], shoot in brighter exposure, and perform brightness adjustment during color grading. Also, noise may be decreased when you shoot at ISO speed lower than ISO 400 (even though the dynamic range will be narrowed)."

As a 1DX Mark II owner I really hope C Log goes to the top end stills camera from Canon. Its a bit disappointing they basically made the 5D Mark IV the 5D C and can't give us Mark II's a path to make it the 1D C II, which in a way it is, but without C log.

Agree with Sergio. I too have the 1DXII. Canon should have announced clog for it as well. I don't mind paying the 99 USD for c-log in my 1DXII. Though at the price of 1DXII, it should be a free upgrade. Someone start a petition to Canon and then I will forward it to them. :)

I'll sign the petition as well! It's absurd that the 5D IV gets Log but not the 1DX II. I actually called Canon customer service (1-800-OK-CANON) and spoke to one of their technicians. I told her the 1DX II should also get Log, and she was very receptive and said she'll pass along the message.
