ARRI Alexa

It's not your fault for not knowing the name Greg Lundsgaard, there are plenty of A-list Steadicam and camera operators who quietly toil away for decades without becoming household names, as it were. Even some of the younger Steadicam operators might not be familiar with him. Check out his IMDB--it scrolls forever and there are many massive movies on there from back in the day. I just couldn't quite push past Greg being described as the Steadicam operator on Hawaii 5-0 without saying something!

Hey Charles, thanks for bringing more context to the conversation!

I actually did dig a bit into his background when I saw the sale and probably should have given him a better bio than "just" working on Hawaii 5-0. Mostly I was passing along the info from his sales posting about the camera.

As an aside, I've done a good bit of digging around on https://www.theop.io/ since seeing you post about it on this site, and have really enjoyed reading and watching all of the great work done by camera operators over the years. Greg would certainly seem to be in that elite category.

Now, if only I'd bought his used Alexa... maybe some of the magic would have rubbed off. ;)

Glad you have been enjoying The Op! My sincere hope as one of the behind the scenes voices in the project is that it can possibly inspire present and future operators and DP's the way that hearing some of these stories and breakdowns inspired me at a critical point in my career. I can literally point to the times and places where I was privileged to hear in-person versions of these 30 years ago that entirely re-shaped my approach to the process.

Again no worries on the Greg thing!

On the Alexa...it is always wild to see cameras that were sought after just a few years ago devalue like this. My Varicam LT isn't worth selling against what I can still shoot with it, without any real compromise. Thinking of the classic Alexa cameras being remanded to virtual paperweights reminds me of seeing Ikegami HL-79's (arguably the best portable tube camera ever made) turn into copy stand cameras after their prime...

Have you considered Craigslist? eBay? I would not think a pawn shop would be the way to go, but I've never used one

you're telling me you're not going to sell your URSA 12K to Jimmy when you're ready for the LF, everyone knows Jimmy and his shop in CO

Pawn shop called, might let it go...could a DVXuser grab it? bump
Surely all of the conversation in this thread has convinced someone to buy this Alexa?

Are there no more doers of great deeds?

No more dreamers of great dreams?

Where have all of the true artists gone?

Wild to happen to drop into this thread! I was the person who bought that Alexa SXT from Greg! Took a lot of self-control to not fan-boy over who I was buying the camera from. Being able to capture open gate at 3.4K natively (or 3.2K 16:9) in ProRes was the big reason for going with the SXT. I don't see myself using the 4K upscaling modes at all. In camera RAW recording (via Codex SXR drives) when needed is another plus. I already had a lot of sufficient support hardware so all good there. The image from this camera is so nice!

That said, I'll hold off on de-railing the convo further. I'm hoping you find a good home for your Alexa Classic, NorBro! That's a crazy good price!

As a new (to me) Alexa owner myself, I highly recommend someone take this camera off NorBro's hands!

It's over...the artists are gone...filmmaking's shot...industry's done...no more pros...😭
How's the image stabilization on this camera? Flip out LCD? I want to do some walk and talk vlogging.
You might need a new hip if you tried to walk and talk vlog with it...🤣

Thank you!!:)

Just want to chime in to say that this is an amazing deal. I sold my FX3 last year and now use an Alexa Classic as my A-cam for freelance commercial shoots and narrative work.

You can buy a tripod from Prompter People that can handle up to 30lbs, and you'll be fine. Add the Arri Wedge Adapter and a Smallrig VCT plate and you're still well under $1K for support.

On mine I bought the Leitax EF mount so I can easily use a wider and cheaper variety of lenses than PL. Might make a video on YouTube soon of how I put together the cheapest possible Arri Alexa kit. This price NorBro is offering is amazing.
