I use Edius 2.5 ( used it since ver.1 with my StormDV card). Not sure if I'll upgrade to 3 or not. The real time aspects with the Storm card and Edius just aren't worth the bugs the software seems plagued with. More informatin here at the Canopus forums. You'll have to register to read, but worth it if you're thinking about the Canopus Edius route.
I've been using Vegas since it was Vegas Video, and I always come back to it if I want to FINISH a project with the least amount of hassles or problems.
Thanks for the reply. I'm not really thinking about buying it or anything, but I used ProCoder 2 for a while (before I got Cleaner XL) and it seemed like a fairly intuitive piece of software, so I checked on Camopus' other products and was just curious.
Vegas is nice for simplicity, but in general, I find that it's a bit difficult to work with (compared to PPro). Everything is just the right amount of backwards to make it aggrivating.
I have been using Edius 2.51 here for about six months & am getting to feel at home with it. Can't find a mention of a Version 3, however Canopus are pushing a HD Version down here, prety much aimed at the broadcast industry. Too rich for my blood! Try this link. http://www.canopus.com/US/support/streaming/samples/video_ediusBE_HI.html
Damn, that sounds pretty hardcore. If you check Canopus' website, they have version 3 up on there. Version 3 is software only, while the HD and HDV versions they were pushing in the video are designed for hardware integration. I might have to check it out now...
I've been on a Canopus system for about 3 years I guess... and I recently found myself in the unfortunate postion of needing to do a system reformat! Well I found that XP wants me to RELOAD all of my software. Yep, all of it.
So anyway, this has me considering other options since I'll be starting off truly clean. Before I just dump my outdated Premiere 6.0 back in I'd like to consider alternatives... and yes, I've used Vegas. Mixed feelings on it.
So does anybody have an evolved view of Edius? There are some really clever attributes that other NLE's are still lacking. I like the idea of running DVDs straight off the timeline... and mixing HD and SD footage with (supposedly) no problems. Plus I've already got the card so it should be snappy as all get out.
If you're considering going to the HVX, Canopus is supposed to have fully implemented P2/MXF support, even more tightly integrated than Apple or Avid. That said, I don't really know anything about Edius 3; I tried looking on their website and it was rather confusing: there's Edius 3, Edius SP, Edius NX, Edius for HDV, Edius SD, Edius HD, all sorts of hardware cards, a varicam option pack, a P2 option pack, a DVCPRO-HD codec option pack... what the heck? I'll try talking to them at DV Expo and see if we can sort through what you'd need to look at in order to fully evaluate it.
