A Documentary: Memoirs of a Male Geisha

Charlie Anderson

Not so clever
Holding true to the last festival, one of my entries this time around will be a documentary.

I've always been fascinated with Japenese culture, especially with Geishas, and my buddy Shane told me he has a lot of information on the Male Geishas, he even said that he's been working on becoming one...something I've never even heard about. I tried to ask him about it and find some information online about it but I couldn't get anything out of him or the internet. He pretty much told me to trust me on this one and that it's a deep dark secret in Japenese culture and that it's not even a page on wikipedia about it.

So I figure I'd trust his word, get a little funding for this film this time around and do another documentary for time fest.

Now I know what you all are thinking, "how's this fit for TimeFest?" and that's a good question because I can't even begin to figure this one out. I asked Shane the same thing and he told me "it's perfect for time fest, just wait, post a thread about it on the forums and trust me, it'll fit perfectly". So here we go. I'm going over to his place next week to shoot an interview with him about the subject.

Hopefully I'll discover something new and exciting!

I've often wondered why more members don't make serious documentaries. Clearly people have the chops and the equipment. Bravo to you, sir, for jumping in with this fascinating piece. I will be watching this one first when the viewing starts.

taikomochi (or houkan)

taikomochi (or houkan)

Are you talking about a "taikomochi" or is the male geisha you're referring to something completely different?

Knowing my friend Shane it's probably the whole face paint/dress of a Geisha but on a guy instead of a girl...but it very well could be about the male counterpart of the Geisha as well, I don't know. He won't tell me any information about it until we start the interview sometime next week (hopefully if my schedule permits it).

I'll update this as I get more information. I'm really going into this blind but I've been promised very good information so I'm excited as well.

Hey Charlie, Glad to see you entering again. And happy to have you bringing us another documentary!

Very interesting concept... Looking forward to learning more and following your thread.

Best to you and Welcome!

Wow this sounds really interesting. Brave of you to go in blind like this, but it sounds like your friend must have some good stories. Good luck!

That definately sounds interesting! Haven't seen one of those male geishas when I was in Japan.

And you know how to pitch this as well!

Good luck!
