I think knowing a thing or two about how light, imaging technology, and the human visual system work is interesting and useful. Especially as it applies to our work. It's perhaps not necessary, but I found this book really interesting. Available everywhere; if you buy used, be sure to get the...
I'd say rod systems aren't overrated so much as overused.
As Morgan and Brian say, rods are super useful and even necessary in lots of situations. But I think many newer and casual creators, influencers, and productions employ them in situations where they just aren't needed... and as you say...
I have a 32-inch ASUS ProArt PA32U that I bought about five years ago. Good then; good now. Was about US$1300. I think the equivalent quality is probably about the same price. My goal wasn't to get a true reference monitor, but to get something affordable and accurate enough for low-end corp and...
One thing I would add is pay attention to audio. A small 10x10 office space can sound pretty boxy. But with some sound diffusion on the wall, and good mic technique, it can work if your needs aren't too fancy. (I say this as a location-audio guy; there's a lot to it but you probably want to keep...
I don't really care what social-media "influencers" think of a camera like the Burano. And I guess in this instance, that includes Affleck. But I'd also guess that a key reason comments were turned off on the YouTube video is because it came out the same day that his wife filed for divorce. I'm...
My feeling is that if the Z200 & NX800 have good audio limiters, then not having 32-bit audio is more OK.
I've said before, and probably said it here somewhere, that the audio limiters on my Canon C70 are pretty decent. Not as smooth as those on my Sound Devices recorders (and also not...
SF, what sort of setup are you planning for your verite/R&G days? How many audio tracks and cameras?
I use my C70 for verite-style solo shooting a lot. Works well for that, overall. And in my opinion, the C70's audio is pretty good. Nice preamps, good limiter. And I say this as a location-audio...
Ya, Alex covers the problems with TC in modern cameras when jamming (in the "connect, jam, disconnect" use of the term). Though smaller mirrorless camera still tend to be worse. The C70, at least the one I own and another I've rented fall somewhere between smaller mirrorless/hybrid cameras and...
Bummer about the Track E. Glad you found another TC generator
BTW- The timecode on my C70 isn't super stable and consistent. So when dealing with timecode, I don't jam it, I leave the TC generator attached to the camera. If just jamming, at least plan to rejam after a few hours.
With HDMI on a monitor, I use a cable from Kondor Blue that has right-angle connectors; keeps things a bit less poky. Available in a couple bright colors; I use black. Also available with a straight 12-inch cable...
> Firstly I find it odd that folk would care about the colour of a monitor.
I think most of us are hip to not relying on a cheap monitor for color. But some of the people we work with...especially some clients... are not.
So just to keep them happy, or at least quiet 😊, reasonably...
I have an SmallHD Action 5 as backup, and have seen various other cheap models on jobs. The cheap monitors seem inconsistent from unit to unit. In addition to not depending on cheap monitors for accurate color, I'd add don't depend on them for exposure... Especially, IME, with the...
Speaking of operating while exhausted, perhaps the increased depth of field from a one-inch sensor would be a good thing. ;-)
Maybe rent one or two camcorders and see what you think? Looks like a four (or so) day rental of a Canon XF605 or Panasonic AG-CX350 will cost less than US$200.
