The many shoot-outs were well-intentioned, but I always thought they were wastes of time. I remember everyone trying to come up with the "best" way to do them so that the "results" would be above reproach - trying to make them "neutral," or, failing that, trying to give each camera its best...
It's just a placeholder, but one which will make it easier to composite later. A regular, well-defined shape will be easier to track than Xes.
It doesn't even have to be green or blue.
I don't really know projectors well, though yes, they should all have that functionality. As for wattage, you can go brighter and always ND down if necessary, but you can't make a dimmer projector brighter.

If you want to do it practically, which I respect, I would rear-project the website page onto a cut sheet or translucent panel. Any projector should let you do that.
Alternatively, with almost any projector, you should also have wide latitude to angle the projection, so you could front-project...
It sounds like your conversion through Shutter may be inconsistent - with the caveat that I don't know exactly what the MRC1 is doing to the video while capturing. I assume it's just capturing exactly what the DVX sends it and wrapping it in AVI, though.
PPro should be able to detect and remove...
I get what he's trying to do; he's trying to run analog signal through the VX 1000 so it converts to DV and he can capture it through Firewire. I used to do the same with the DVX.
"Shoot a movie on your iPhone" always seemed like marketing nonsense to me.
Though, to be fair, this particular thing sort of reminds me of the first days of the DVX100 when real 24 fps shooting was within everyone's grasp, and the guerilla squads went out in force with inexpensive gear.
