I bought the A7s as a potential successor to the 5D MK3 Raw to shoot my feature and I'll be testing them together over the next couple of weeks. My initial impressions of the A7s were very good but the 8bit files are a bit fragile. The 5D looks a little sharper here, followed by XAVC S, and then...
It never ceases to amaze me how huge multinational corporations can't figure out the simplest of things like buttons and menus! I've been playing around with the A7s for a couple of days and it started out as a 2 handed operation, not an easy task when you've got it on a shoulder rig. I had my...
I've been doing some tests with 5D raw files debayered/converted to prores4444 in AE and graded in both FCPX and R11 with the same filmconvert & Impulz Luts applied. FCPX crushes the image into a REC709 colour space. Resolve doesn't crush the image, the DaVinci colour space has a wider gamut &...
Rolling shutter is bad but not quite a deal breaker because you can get around it if you're careful, but short of hacking the firmware there's no way to get around the ugly highlight aliasing. I urge everybody to contact their local Sony service centre and demand a fix for it. And anyone who...
NDs and lights aren't a problem. What I wanna know: is S-log @ 3200 ISO going to give me as much shadow detail as another profile @ 100, 400, or 800 ISO? And how much dynamic range are we losing with S-log @ 3200 ISO compared to S-log @ 1600 ISO? Den's stuff shot @ 1600 ISO S-log looked great...
I've been trying to decide between a Shogun, an Odyssey7Q, and a Pix 220i and after much deliberation I decided to go with a secondhand Sound Devices Pix 220. Here's why:
1) ProRes 4444 recording: it's all about the compression ratio. I really don't see the point in recording ProRes 422HQ 4k...
I did a quick ISO noise test last night, just looks sharper than H.264 without the in camera denoising and compression. These are crops off a screen shot, I didn't crop them the same size bu they look identical which is not the case with H.264 video. I'll test a few more ISOs today to see if...
400 ISO has more fixed pattern noise than 320 or 640 ISO on the MK3. 1250 ISO has the least FPN. Just do a body cap ISO test, push the shots 3-4 stops in post to see the noise.
I don't know about the rest of you but after almost 5 years listening to people jerk off about cameras (part of that time moderating the jerk offs @ cinema5D) I'm kinda over it. Call me crazy but I just wanna make cool films!
It amazes me how people can piss away all their money on a Scarlet...
This is the backdrop I used for the tests. I tried an outdoor scene first but with all the detail and high contrast the codec just turned the pans to mud and I couldn't even see the bloody pole!
Mods could you please sticky this thread.
Hehe, now that I have your attention. Here's a narrative short scene I shot with the MKIII. After I shot it I decided I had to start looking for another camera, it really shows the MKIIIs resolution and dynamic range shortcomings. I've been testing a Nikon D5200 and so far I'm very impressed...
Had a play with the Iscorama and 35mm Summicron-r 720p 60p. I couldn't see what the hell I was doing and underexposed by 3+ stops!
It looks like the Super-8 stuff from when I was a kid.
It's pretty nice for $700 and I think it blows every DSLR away up to the D800 and 5D MKIII and even gives them a run for their money. I could comfortably make films with it, it looks very cinematic.
BTW most of that clip was shot @ f/22, not exactly the sweet spot of the lens.
Here's an...
