Part of tip #3 is WRONG.
Moving a light further away from the subject does not soften the light it actually makes it harder.
Softness is all about size and distance to the subject.
The bigger the source the softer the light, the smaller the light the harder it is.
If it's a wide shot I wouldn't do anything. Just let them be beautifully backlit. Then clean up your close ups with either a light diffusion like 1/2 soft frost or hi-lite, or with a larger bounce (ultra or muslin, or if you're worried about punch i'd go with a white/silver checkerboard)

I think using fabric outside is very standard.
The problem is when people use very reflective fabrics that are very small. Once you get to a 8x8 ultrabounce its generally soft enough that any variation isnt a problem.
