    Sony PXW-Z280 & PXW-Z190 4K cams

Sony has introduced two new 4K XDCAMs at NAB, the PXW-Z280 & PXW-Z190. Both have 3-chip CMOS sensors, the Z280 uses 1/2" size, the Z190 uses 1/3" chips.

    These cams are damned impressive.

But Sony couldn't put these nice codecs in the new FS5II?

Yeah, they tick all the boxes.

Sony sees 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internal as an FS7 feature, so it was never going to happen with the FS5 II. ( the Z280 costs $2,000+ more than the FS5 II ) And I'm guessing that we won't see 10-bit in the A7S III either.

I plan on buying a new ENG camera this year to go with my GH5 cameras, so right now the Z190 looks like the camera to beat for me. ( the GH5 takes care of 4K 10-bit )

Interesting. the z280 has 3 CMOS 1/2 imagers much like the EX1 gone 4K with 10 bit 4:2:2 and 4 channel audio. Frame rates do only go up to 60 fps including HD. Yes lots to like but Sony has stalled out with HFR recording options. They are really reluctant to give that one except for the F700 and the FS7 which after user testing just didn't cut it for most: too many artifacts in the recordings. Will be interesting to see real world HDR clips.

Yes, I've had my hands on them as they will be my responsibilty at NAB, and I can say they are damn impressive little cameras. Such a breath of fresh are to have new cameras based on the XDCAM line, (rather than the prosumer NXCAM products) with all the cool bells and whistles we've come to expect from truly pro cameras. Packed with tons of features, including variable ND and OLED viewfinders, etc. I do agree that the main thing missing is HFR and I have already begun the lobbying process with the Japanese engineers to see if at a least 120 fps 1080P can be added at some point. HFR looks great on the Z150 and Z90, so there is no reason not to think it won't look excellent on the new cameras if they get it. All I can only say is that they have not ruled it out.

The cameras are not aimed at you. IMO.

There's a lot of people fumbling around with big sensor cameras who really need to take a look at 4K cameras like these. They don't need shallow DoF -- but they do need decent zoom lenses with fast apertures and lots of other great features (such as 10-bit 4:2:2 4K) that cannot even be found on NXCAM-based cameras like the FS5. These are the right tools for the right people . . . but not for everyone.

Doug I offer two services - solo shooting and "cinamatography" with my assistant.

I own and use the ex1 - solo shoot wise I'm interested in something that feels like an upgrade from the ex1

The ex1 has a FIZ lens - something I'm extremely reluctant to lose. Making me scared of z90 and that class.

The ex1 has some goodness beyond its numbers - I think that is three chips.

But I've always found the zoom not wide enough.

A 24mmFOV 120fps 10 bit ex1 with a bit more gain could absolutely be for me? Even HD

On the lack of wide I'd even consider a module that tied a camera like this to the Sony go pro thing mounted on the hotshoe - well I would if that cam had Nd

Interesting! OLED viewfinders. I thought you might have this beat at NAB. I know you are/were a fan of the EX3. Still have mine. I suspect they will have an EX3 varient of the z280 but probably not this year. Guess we will see in the next 24 hours.

All of a sudden there appears to be a lot of stuff to be released at NAB. Thinking about flying down now for a day or two.

                  EDIT:

Reflecting on this camera for a few minutes now. If the OLED is as good as the a7S that I have, then that might take care of the flip out display matter. Although I sure like having a snoot/diopter on that display.

Glad to see even the Z190 has timecode in/out, unlike say the EX1 which lacked such features.

Doug.. Pleeeeease tell us the grip on the Z280 rotates like the EX-1 did.

Any info on the max data rate in 4k/24?, I assume it's probably the same as the Z100 about 225mbs

Scroll down towards the bottom of the page and watch the behind the scenes. You will see the geared zoom and iris ring, just like the EX series cams.

The z280 is feature for feature an intended replacement for the EX cameras, as it has the 3 CMOS 1/2" chips. It also has digital zoom which looks pretty darn good. I have it on an a7S and it works well. These cams have much smaller imagers than the a7 series cameras but in the promo video the digital zoom looks decent. The colour in these cameras too can match the EX and F3. There is some footage that shows the same colour palette/science.

More info here here. Also a couple of videos. With sensitivity up to F13 in 50p and a SNR of 63dB the specs are pretty impressive. Being three a chipper no Debayer necessary so resolution should be pretty good. The good old evergreen XDCam MPEG-2 422 50-mbit broadcast friendly codec comes standard which is a plus.

These internals in an upgraded PMW-300, ie PXW-Z300 with interchangeable lens would I think sell fairly well.

The WIAdapter.. not zoom through and also very fragile.. ruins the shut the lens away matte box.

As for the FIZ lens.. yes I know these cams have FIZ lenses.. it is the PXW-z90 that has a pure plastic lens that scares me and make these new cameras attractive in comparison.

                            --

Overall I would really like 75degree view (24FF equiv) - it seems to me that a zoom going from 30-550 is a bit nuts .. the long end is more than needed especially in the era of digital zoom.

Shooting inside cars, elevators or a press scrum (surely the home of these cameras?) requires a wide end on the zoom to my head

The EX1 is a super tool, has served me well, gained my trust.. but has never been on my A-list because of the lack of wide. It is never a joy to shoot with. It is a tool you accept, appreciate the modularity of it, speed of setup.. but never a joy.

It would be so refreshing to have a camera one could really fall for and enjoy.

I guess an 'EX3' with modern codec could be such a camera, I dont know what wide zooms were available in 1/2 format.

Yes a PXW-Z300 with interchangeable lens with the 280 spec would be a pretty decent seller I think. On the EX3 I used to use the Fujinon HD 3.3 x 13 which was a great lens on that camera. Equivalent to a 4.5 x 13 2/3" lens on 2/3" camera. In fact just sold as it's been sitting on the shelf so long.
