Does the {v} denote it's better for a video look, and {f} is better for a film look?

While we're on the topic of picture profiles and color, my wife and I watched a German film from 1955, entitled Sissi, and the colors were outstanding. The thing that hits you is that the skin tones are like a painting, the lattitude is great, both indoors and out, nary a blown out highlight, lighting balance indoor day shots was on the money, and the colors were so opulent and rich. My wife read that the film was shot on Agfa film.

Sissi is dedicated to the young Austrian Empress. It was made in 1955. Directed by Ernest Marischka and starring Romy Schneider (as the empress Sissi) and Karheinz Bohm (as the emperor Franz Joseph).

I just love the look of this film and the way the colors express the richness of the story, as if the cinematography were perfectly integrated with the story of a young lady in love with an emporer and all the luscious surroundings that they carried on within.

It would be quite a trick to figure out how to match the color in terms of function curves and transfer characteristics, but it's a look I very much like.

A sample frame, albeit this Google image scan has poor white balance:

great looking clip-a real studio moment.

(by the way, i've always had a crush on romy schneider. she looks like a teenager in that shot. she had great screen presence.)

        thanks for sharing

        be well

the story is never black & white

Has any one done a bleach bypass preset? I always liked it on the A1 for a night time or dreamy look.

If not I could see what we could do starting from the A1 settings.

Duke I have not seen anything like that in the menu, but I have a bleach look in Magic Bullet Looks.

I hate learning a new camaera and looking like a newbie all over again. LOL

I looked through the EX1 preset options. Many have the same or close equivalents. However, I didn't see settings to change the gain on individual color channels, so it looks like I'll be doing it in post too.

There is no reason not to do things like that in post. If you make your footage too bleached in-cam you have no way of bringing back color info. We should all be shooting in a generally good & balanced PP, then screw it all up after the fact when you can view it on a reasonable monitor.

The reason not to do it in post is that with 4.2.0 color space and 8 bits you are more likely to cause banding with heavy color grading. Its a safety issue to preserve IQ. Of course there is the nanoflash option.

If you do it in camera, or partially in camera, you're less likely to screw it up. Also, its faster to just cut and not CC in post.

But if its not an option, its not an option.

This is from Pg 2 of the BBC white paper you linked-

My recommendations are in the last column, labeled “BBC”, where
                      appropriate. Settings are given for:
                      v Television production
                      f Film-look television

Sorry for skipping the last 12 pages of information in this thread. Has anyone post a picture profile for shooting in dim light situation such as concert style settings? An suggestions on the settings?

has anyone tried matching an EX1 with a Canon XL-H1? i'm gonna do some testing of my own Wednesday evening, but I wanted to get a head start on any tips you might have.

                                thanks in advance!!
