    Sony's S35 entry

There was a rumor that Sony would be coming out with an S35 cam. Now its on the official Sony website near the bottom of the page.

    http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/content/name/ssw-bc-35mm-2010

The links don't work yet, but they're going to do a question and answer on http://www.facebook.com/SonyProfessionalEurope on 11/8/10 from 10am to 12pm UK time. That's about 9 hours difference, but with daylight savings I'm not sure.

There was speculation that it would be called the EX35, but the Sony page lists it as the PMW-F3. If its an EX1 with an S35 sensor and 10 bit HD-SDI out that will be interesting. If its that plus 4.2.2 and 50Mbps, that will be very interesting.

Note there are versions with and with out a lens a la EX1 and EX3.

And then comes... The Canon rumor!

Has anyone called a rep? (early pricing?) I know everyone is expecting it to be in a TOTALLY different price bracket than the AF100...I know the key spec differences are 4:2:2, 10bit, S35....AF100 is lesser on all 3 counts. Early guesses are in the 17-20K range. Let's all hope that Sony gives the AF100 something more to think about....at that price...it's irrelevant. So...on that note: Pricing anyone?

            EDIT: Price listed below.
No price yet, but they have specs up now, here:

            http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/product/xd...technicalspecs

My preliminary impression is that the non-lens version an EX3 inside, with a bigger faster sensor.

            SPEC HIGHLIGHTS

            35Mbps Long GOP, MPEG2. 17 to 60fps in 720p and 17 to 30fps in 1080p.

HD-SDI, Dual link HD-SDI, HDMI, Firewire, USB

PL Lens mount adapter, but it looks like a Sony proprietary mount for the zoom lens.

            Full S35 sensor, not APS-C or m4/3.

SxS memory cards, or will work with SD cards and an adapter.

LCD and viewfinder same as EX1R.
Its not 4.2.2 or 10 bit, its really an EX1/3 with a bigger sensor so its only 10 bit on the HD-SDI out. It would be 4.2.2 with the Nano though.

            PDF brochure here:
            http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/pdf/Genera...site=biz_en_GB

            EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT!
On Sony's face book they said:

            "Same sensor as the F35"

"444 is available via dual link again in April 2011 price tbc." It will be an add on that you pay for.

"There are two models, one PMW-F3K with three lenses (35, 50, 85mm F2.0) - Euros 20,700, PMW-F3L body only model - Euros 14500. Availability is Jan 2011. With regards to details on the zoom lens, Sony will be producing specific zoom lenses for this camcorder, which we intend to show a prototype at NAB 2011" (That sounds like $2.3k each for f2 lens.)

"This will be 4:2:0 8-bit (same as XDCAM EX)"

            COMMENT:
The body will be cheaper than a Red body, but still out of my price range.

              Japanese release one: http://www.sony.co.jp/SonyInfo/News/...10-152/#sankou
              レンズ(PMW-F3K)

              焦点距離 35mm 50mm 85mm
              絞り値 T2.0~Close T2.0~Close T2.0~Close
              最短撮影距離 0.35m 0.5m 0.85m
              フィルター径 95mm 95mm 95mm

There is 2 versions, one is with 3 prime lenses (OMW-F3K) and the other one are without lens. It seems out-put only 1080P, are those lenses covers 2K~3K only? BIG QUESTION.

My my... a mini-S35. Something tells me that with Sony doing an S35 at US$20k and a smaller sensor at $2000, there is going to be something in the middle. But how do you do it without killing the EX1r/EX3? Do you do an EX3-PL, or EX3-S35?

Man the next 6 months are going to be interesting with announcements from Sony, Nikon, Panasonic shipping before X-mas, etc.

if sony comes out with a aps-c/s35 cinema cam in the $5000 to $8000 range it's gonna take some sales from the ex1/3...just like panasonic is taking "some" sales from hpx170/hvx200a/hmc 150 with the af-100..
I'm hoping for a aps-c cinema camera, there are simply better and more aps-c lens selections over micro 4/3!

Not! ALL lens that work on a aps-c will work on a micro 4/3 while a lens that covers a micro 4/3 may not cover aps-c.

what i am saying is ... an apc-c sized competitor to the af-100 is needed because the aps-c lens selection is larger and better..the last thing I would want to do is to put a aps-c lens on a 4/3 cam...I want sony/canon/nikon to create aps-c camera!

I was at the briefing. Price is $16,000 without lens and $23,000 with 3 Sony-branded primes: 35/50/85 T2.0. Optional Sony zoom lens to follow but no details yet.

I'm thinking that its likely Canon will move up their June-July release to making an announcement at NAB. The rumored cam is 4.2.2 50Mbps, so its like the XF100, but with a large sensor. You wouldn't even need a Nano for broadcast quality. Price was reported to be $6-$9k.

I love it when there's competition.

Wow that's an expensive piece of garbage for 20K. It can only do 60p in 720p? Really? And no over-cranking like the AF-100? How is this better than a $800 T2i... which is fully progressive and not wrapped in that BS 60i crap. The only thing it's got going is that fact that there will probably be less aliasing... which is not work and extra $19k.. and 4:2:2 10-bit output.
