FX3 in 2023?

    FX3 in 2023?

    I sold my a7siii and ordered an fx3 to use as a b-cam with my fx6. I don't shoot stills and wanted a more cinema focused cam. There is a rumor that Sony will have a new FX cam in the near future. I also took a look at the the new BM 6K FF which has a great image, but it won't match my fx6 and the usability/buginess of BM cams is an issue.

    Thoughts on the possible new FX release? Do you think there will be anything mind blowing?

    I would not think mind blowing but maybe better? After the last three years of camera releases, specs are kind of at a baseline for all cameras. Usability and features are going to have to come to the top of the list as we do not need 16K at 240fps... What we do need is ergos, great viewfinders, special NDs, AF, IBIS... I hope the makers will show some creativity as they will need it as we are pretty much all good for many cameras. To get sales, they are going to need to offer something good.

      Yeah, e-nd and 6k - or a 6k downsample would be nice in an fx3 II…

        Nikon showing a "surprising rise in demand" with their recent sales just shows that camera manufacturers need to start making better cameras with bigger specs and not repeat releases like we've seen done time and again since the late 2010s. Remember all the 18 megapixel Canons and 24 megapixel Nikon refreshes every year? Now the game has changed with the Nikon Z series getting good with the Z7II, Z8 and Z9 that there's more demand. Canon is seeing similar things with the R5 and R5C for 8K video so now that may have dented plans for more 4K cameras, maybe even that crazy high dynamic range 4K pro model that's been rumored for a while, and Sony is starting to feel the heat now that they've recycled the A7S III so many times in their lineup that it's getting stale and they'll have to switch to the A1's 8K sensor or even come up with 6K models just to keep the camera train running. The Blackmagic FF 6K is a nice treat but from your tests I can see it needs some refinement with a few firmware updates but so did the Pocket 4K and 6K when they came out, however, Blackmagic is still holding the ball for price to performance ratio and there is quite a lot of good footage coming out of the FF 6K despite the occasional flaw. Overall, when it comes to the FX3 and even the FX6, you're essentially fighting over the same camera as they're variants of the the A7S III and unless you need them for work right now, I'd say hold off or look at the Nikon Z8/Z9 with Sony E adapters or even switch to the Netflix approved Canon R5C for the 8K video factor, that at least gets you a little future proof safety going forward.

          Zack, I don't think the BM 6K can be fixed with a FW update? I described the problem to the Sony cinema line manager at the NYC creator's event and he didn't think so. Seems like a sensor flaw or other hardware problem. It would be great if FW could fix it though. I'm most likely going to return the 6K and pick up the fx3. It just fits my shooting needs (run n' gun, unpredictable lighting conditions) and the BM fanboys/cult have soured me to the company.

            If you don't need full frame I just picked up an FX30 for a B cam to the FX6 and it's been great so far. B&H (and others) had a deal where it was available for a couple hundred off the regular price. The only downside (aside from my usual mirrorless gripes: small batteries, no internal NDs, etc.) is that 4K120 involves a pretty heavy crop. Otherwise I'm pretty happy so far.

              Thanks was eyeing the fx30. I have a lot of FF lenses though for my fx6 and it would suck to lose that wider FOV and some of that low light mojo, but I've heard that the fx30 does less NR than the fx3...

                There is a member here saying in another post that he spoked with Sony and no new FX3 II and FX6 II for another few years....

                  Sonyalpharumors starting to say the fx9ii is coming in January. Seems right to me. Maybe it uses the 6k a9iii sensor. Burano 8k, fx9ii 6k... and then the eventual fx6ii could remain 4k. Product segmentation
