    Flight lighting kit (2021)

Curious what other are using for OMB-style flight jobs, obviously where the lighting is checked baggage. Ideally capable of standard window-background setups and more, with at least two fixtures.

I’ve used an Intellytech LC-120 1x3 2 light kit, but get a bit frustrated by how cumbersome they are to set up. Considering finding a case to hold two Astras.

For about a year, I was doing OMB travel shoots for a major health care provider. For interviews, Lighting kit was Lc160, a reflector for fill, a Practilite for scratch, and a bicolor 1x1 flex panel in case I needed to add some ambient fill. It all went into a large lightweight roller suitcase, with each part wrapped for protection and without any of the original cases to reduce weight. The client was billed for the overweight fee. I brought three Matthew’s merf stands.

Once on location, I often threw the small Practilite in a backpack with a v mount and a merf stand while running around grabbing b roll. Allowed me to quickly add a bit of shape or edge light in otherwise flat lighting conditions.

As you mentioned, the intellytech is a bit slow to set up. However, none of my interviews were that rushed, so it was fine.

I think recent generations of COBs would be perfect for flying. I've flown with 4x LC-160s in a pelican storm 2950 and they fit perfectly in the case (as in completely fill the entire case).

I think a forza 60b and 2x forza 300bs would be pretty capable kit you could fly with. I'd use a small softbox on the 60b, 300b either bare or with fresnel and barn doors for hitting something in the background (or doubled up with the key light) then the other 300b through 6x6 diffusion hung from a stand/bar. The small COB lights themselves have the advantage of giving you the choice of checked/carry on, where as the lite cloths can pretty much only be checked. I imagine this set up would be a smaller footprint than 3x LC-160s but can't confirm.

Looks like tenba make some decent panel cases:

yeah, I'd also thought of trying out my pair of Intellytech X-100's with a couple soft boxes in the kit... main concern is that they're pretty low on output (like a hair over a 120d or similar) and struggle in window setups. Most of the 300W+ COBS just seem grossly huge.

Not really considering single-color lights unless they're tungsten... really loved my Lowel RIFAs, prolights, and v-lights in this role in days of yore.

The forza 300b power supply looks big but then the light heads look pretty small. So I guess it also comes down to how you plan to transport everything.

I'm assuming you'll have a separate case for lighting stands or does everything have to fit in a single case?

I typically throw the light stands in a rifle case with the tripod, slider, mic boom, and stingers. Small stands like the ol' reliable Lowel Unis fit in my Pelican case where the lights usually ride, but they don't hold much of a fixture (LC120's about max them out).

If you go COB then maybe you can jam a softbox or two in the rifle case at no real added weight.

If you already own astras though then it's obviously cheaper to buy a case instead of new lights (and case).
