    Lighting control kits...

hey guys, I'm looking for some good lighting control/gell kits... I have these two in mind:

    http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/18x24licokim.html

    http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/m...VSCUSTOMGELKIT

Has anyone had any experience with the evs custom gell kit? It looks like something I could use but i seriously doubt I'd use all those gels. Would I be better off just buying the few gels I need separate? (daylight, nd, diffusion)

How do i mount these accessories... a c-stand?

The first kit you usually mount on c-stands
It looks like its a little cheaper from B&H : http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search

While I haven't used that gel kit, I have used all of those gels at one point or another. Usually you just buy gels as needed, but some of the more common ones grip trucks keep a stock of.

The applicability of any "kit" is going to depend upon how you will use the items within. In the case of the Matthews light control kit, you are paying for more than the items contained within than if you just purchased them individually (due to the cost of the carrying bag) and as it has been pointed out, without C-stands (with gobo arms) you will not have any practical way to utilize them.

The get kit is certainly a bargin (based upon the number of items) but again, you could just pick what you really need.

The more common gels are 1/4, 1/2 and full CTB & CTO, the 250 family and opal.

If this is some of your first grip purchases, then you should probably look at what you might need in addition to these items to make a usable system.

Here is a link to a 1 ton grip package that is well thought out and includes enough basic items to cover a decent variety of situations:

Follow the link in the left hand frame to the 1-TON GRIP PACKAGE to see the list of items included.

Dude, NEVER buy a "kit" like that scrim kit, you always get ripped off!

Call NOrms in North Hollywood. You can buy the exact scrims without the bag for half that price, around 175 bucks!! seriously. you can buy one hell of a bag with the money you have left over.

        call 818-766-6676

as far as gels go: CTO, CTB and diff are what you use most, unless you do a lot music videos and want colors. I have several "packs" and use them often.

bear in mind these packs are small and won't work for kinos or large lights. It's good buy a set of larger gels as well. they're sold by the piece but cost a good bit, around 4 buck each.

Hi guys, I just wanted to tell everyone why I created the EVS gel kit, it was because I felt bad that we were selling everyone these three kits all the time for $90, and they only had a total of 16 gels:

          http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/m...uct_Code=55612

          http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/m...uct_Code=55512

          http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/m...uct_Code=55412

So I had Rosco make that kit so that customers could get 34 more gels for $15 less. The most frustrating thing for me as a shooter is that the NRG kits had no multiple diffusion beyond 2 of each, so in the EVS kit, I put in 4 opals.

Rush, that kit looks like a good deal. I have an ARRI Fresnel kit (650,300) and I'm looking to get some gels for it. So i wont be using the CTO gels. (What are CTS gels for? I'm fairly new to lighting.) How well do these handle heat?
Should i use a filter frame

Or good old C47s to the barn doors?
              Thanks

I like the C47s to the barn doors approach much better than using a gel holder since it keeps the gels a good distance from the face of the fixture which extends the life of the gels by a good amount. You do have to watch for spill if you go this route.

Hi Cody, yes you get a discount, but you have to place the order with a person or via email at rush@evsonline.com . The DVXuser price will hold at $75 for a long time, but the non-DVXuser price is going up to $90 next week. Management wanted to make it exactly the same price as the 3 NRG kits.

Luke, no filter holder needed, C47's (wooden clothespins, for anyone who may not be familiar with the jargon) work just fine, actually better. If you clip the gels on the outside of the doors, it preserves the gels and makes quick change easier. If you clip them on the inside, it starts to heat-spoil them after a while, but you get to control the spill with the doors. Rosco gels handle heat very well, because they are infused with color rather than coated like Lee, so they will not peel over usage. I have used them for a very very long time

Straw is a way of gradually warming color temperature with yellow instead of orange CTO gels. I use them a lot to match tones, that's why I included them. They warm up faces and scenery in small increments, and can add a summery sunlit feel without the orange sunset tone of CTO. All the additional color gels are in there for special photography, like when you want a rich lavender backround behind a table top setting on a close up of a particular product. Or chocolate and red for Zombie-vision shots

I have been after a good set of gels so have just been on the phone to EVS and purchased a pack. They seem to be going well.
