24pA possible in imovie HD?

Please excuse the mention of imovie but I don't have time to learn FCP for my project and imovie is easy and with all the plugins you can do some amazing things.

However, I don't know if capturing at 24 p Advanced or 24 p regular with the pull downs will translate into imovie and then back out to tape for film out. Anybody have experience or know about this?

you should be able to just capture as normal. Its still regular video. 24p/24pA both. but i doubt you can edit 24p timeline with imovie if that's what your'e asking.

i have not checked out the new imovie HD- i doubt it has those capabilities- otherwise, the better choice for you would be FC express.

Thanks. Yes, that is the question. Still intersted in making imovie work. FC Express is an option but finding the definitivie answer on imovie (any version) but really imovie HD is my goal.

Haven't purchased my DVX yet because I have been waiting for Jan's promise to give final details on DVX100b on the day after NAB so I can't do a test.

Actually, haven't seen any posting from Jan on DVX at all since NAB. It's all been on the new 200. I got spoiled by her always being her. Sorry, I'm just feeling jealous because she has a new love interest!

Anybody out there with a mac that can load a minute of 24p A into imovie and see if it can be edited and be output?

And Jan, please come back and visit, (and any more details on the 100b?)

again, if you're asking whether it can be imported and edited. yes it can. Its video so you can. On a DVX whether you shoot normal or advanced, unless you capture with pulldown removal, it makes no difference when talking about normal capture and editing. I'm pretty sure this is the case.

the only problem is you going film-out. You can't expect true 24fps editing from iMovie. not even iMovie HD. at least it doesn't say here:http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/edit.html

From what I remember about the DVX100b - it has nothing to do with any features only changes in the material it is made from to make it "legal" for European markets. Kind of like taking the lead out of house paint or arosols out of spray cans.

iMovie doesn't do it, FCE doesn't do it. Progressive timelines are only availible in FCP.

If you use 24p or 24pa you will not be able to cut footage without inevitably altering the pulldown cadence. It won't be the same throughout. What this boils down to is that you can use 24p and edit it in iMovie and it will look good on TV, (24pA will look good too but a bit more studdery), but you CANNOT edit it for film out without forcing whoever you give the footage to do a ton of work extracting progressive frames.

Long story short: you're getting film out, it costs thousands of dollars, 1,000 more for FCP is worth it. And it's a pretty easy program and approximately a billion times more powerful then iMovie and you can learn just a few basic skills and be just fine with it.

Trust me, I'm a big fan of iMovie but it's just not even in the same league.

Thanks all for the replies. So imovie appears to work in 24 p and fine for tv/video out end tape. But no go for film out. Makes sense.

The price of FCP is not the major obstacle here because I happen to have a budget set that will allow the purchase. It's the learning curve that I'm afraid of. I want to keep what little hair I have left.

Just came back from Borders book store in LA and looked at some of the telephone book size (L.A. telephone book that is) manuals for FCP and they seemed daunting. Maybe hands on training. There are a couple of places out here that give classes, though they are costly.

Thanks again for all the help! -- (And the thing about me waiting for the 100b is that somebody said in a another thread something about maybe the 100b will be 16X9 native and I know it was just a wish, but it got me thinking that maybe this was a possibility because of the Canon XL2 having it and Panasonic wanted to stay even with them at this level of camera as far as 16x9 - (Not factoring the way advanced 200 which is leaps and bounds above the Canon).

I don't think we'll hear much about the DVX100B until the after the July 31st, rebate is over for the 100A model. Panasonic may be trying to sell the remaining 100A stock before starting to sell the 100B's. My theory anyway.

This was my thinking as well. Often the case when a company has a new line or model coming out. Apple does this very often. I know the original comments by Jan were about the color and material being the only thing changed on the DVX100b and this could be the case. Jan is great and don't think she would ever mislead anybody.

However, she did say that she would give details about DVX 100b day after NAB opening and there has been no posting from her about this. Again, I'm thrilled that she is so attentive and she is the best resouce! I just wish she'd check in on this one point and say anything even if it is that she has no new information.

I do understand that the new 200 is taking probably all her time and probably hasn't had a chance to even sleep since NAB, let alone even think about the DVX 100b, but it is all I can think about right now (slight exageration here) but I really was looking forward to her promised comments.
