    Sounds like this is a good match for the Linux platform. The apps that come closest are:

    * Kino - http://www.kinodv.org/article/static/2
    * dvgrab - http://www.kinodv.org/article/view/46/1/14/ (command line capture)
    * Cinelerra - http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3
    * LiVES - http://lives.sourceforge.net/index.php?do=features

    Kino, Cinelerra, LiVES are more of NLEs, but sure you could fashion to do live capture from Firewire.

    Good luck and report back any success.

      DV Rack has a lot of other tools too, like a vectorscope, histogram, calibration tools etc. You can't really compare DVRack to a non-linear editing suite...

      Tony: I don't know about anything like DV Rack for GNU/Linux, but I doubt something like that exists.
