OTHER: Crazy Comparison: PX270 vs Canon XF200

I realize this probably seems like apples and oranges but I am considering replacing my Canon XF105 with either a Canon XF205 or Panasonic PX270. They are not in the same price range, but with recent discounts they are close (you can get the PX270 at B&H after rebates for $4400 vs $4000 for the XF205- of course P2 cards/batteries will add cost for me to the Panny).

I shoot primarily swim meets - bright, high contrast scenes that become pretty dark by the end of each meet. I really like the "look" of the XF105 colors, but need longer zoom and higher frame rates at 1080p. I also much prefer control over gamma and color gamut. I also need fast autofocus and great subject tracking if possible. Finally, I would like to be able to use the camera for occasionally shooting live indoor and outdoor concerts.

Mostly, I need outstanding ergonomics. I am tired of great sensors in hard to use camera bodies.

I would be totally new to Panasonic small sensor cameras (I do use the GH4).

Any insights from the group would be greatly appreciated.

Rent each one, some places will reduce the cost of the rental towards the price. Never just buy a camera without trying it out, like buying a car based on the reviews. Once you get in it may not fit you right. I would stick with what you know. Try it out and then you will know.

Good advice, thanks. I've done this before and it was very helpful. Will be a while before I have time to rent and test. Meanwhile, if anyone has any other thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it.

In terms of practically and ergonomics, I'm at NAB and the return of 1/3" and 2/3" with triple 4K CMOS sensors and UHD lenses are very strong here. The live coverage market is not being neglected on the 4K bandwagon. Thanks to optical physics limits, lens manufactures are reluctant to make PL mount super telephoto zoom with the focal length similar to a 23x ENG lens. It's simply not practical due to the extreme high cost, ergonomics and weigh. I suspect the PX-270 will be replaced with a 4K sensor version within a few years. Until then the PX-270 should fit your needs, especially the DRS feature to handle unfavorable lighting conditions.

I would favor the PX270. I remember folks saying some poor stuff about the XF200's light gathering and/or noise. Might warrant more research on the XF200. The PX270 is a solid performer with great codecs. I would guess that the PX270 has more color controls in the menu as well.

If comparison, you should comparer with the XF300 not the XF200.
