Yes we have snow here Down Under! About a 2 and a bit hours drive North East of my house are our Ski fields up in the high country. For all those who remember the devastating bushfires that ripped through my state back in Feb, well most of the bush through the alpine regions was destroyed.
On sunday we went to a place called Lake Mountain. The base town closest to this resort is called Marysville. During the fires this town was razed, only one building survived and it was here where the loss of life was most severe.
They are ever so slowly starting to rebuild some 6 months down the track and most areas are still closed and fenced off. The main street is lined with makeshift shops in the form of portable buildings and containers,,, there a little new houses built and once where there was houses now only stands piles of rubble and caravans where people are living while waiting for there new homes to be built.
The sad reminders of the lives lost are evident by all the memorials placed on some sites where families once lived. The images I saw on TV were horrific and now I've actually see it with my own eyes, one of the worst affected towns, I can now understand the enormity of the situation and devastation that these firestorms caused.
One of the busineses in the main street is called CrossCountry Ski Hire, this is where we hired all our gear for the day. The owners are a couple who lost everything in the fire and are on the rebuild process.
This short film is dedicated to them,,, Greg and Lianne.
