So I thought I was very clever when I pulled all of the .MTS essence files out of their cosy AVCHD wrappers a few months back and stored them in my own folder structure on our server.
And then I started editing with FCP X which won't touch the files, unless they're wrapped in a container format (ie AVCHD.)
If you've done the same thing, Panasonic have a nice bit of freeware to re-wrap, to save you buying ClipWrap or similar.
Took me a while to find, so may be useful to you:

They say it isn't compatible with Mountain Lion, but it has caused me no issues. When you run it, there are 3 options. I successfully used the option button labelled:
"Restore the AVCHD folder from the stream files in the specified folder." When it says it has found an error in the folder and would you like it to fix it, hit OK and don't argue with it. Sanity restored.
Phew...
