What type of filters is everyone else using on their AF100 and Mattebox? 4X4 or 4X5.65? Which would be a better idea for future proofing? I don't anticipate filters being outdated anytime soon. So I'm looking to start building my kit soon. What are the distinct advantages to each size? What would anyone suggest?

This creates a delima since most of the affordable matte boxes have only 4X4 trays...sigh.www.jonfilms.com

If you only go with one set 4x5.65 will be future proof but if size and weight are an issue, the AF-100, GH2 or any camera that has a crop factor will work fine with 4x4. My issue is that 4x5.65 matteboxes are so freekin big...Brent Miller Jr.

I personally prefer wide 4x4 matteboxes and filters. We do have an O-Box with 4x5.65 but we've never 'HAD' to use it. A 4x4 has always been good enough.Brent Miller Jr.

Not true. My mattebox is a 4x4 16:9 Chrosziel and its smaller than a panavision and has both 4x4 and 4x5.65 frames. Its perfect, I sold my Redrock because it was a beast.YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/ErikNaso

The new Chrosziel's are one of the few I havn't actually been able to play with yet but I was eyeing one. I wasn't aware that they were so small; I'll have to order one. I ordered an Oconnor O-Box because it was suppose to be "smaller and lighter" but it still makes the cameras crazy front heavy.Brent Miller Jr.

Mine is old and was used on a Betacam then a DVCpro and now the AF-100. No vignetting and light. Does what it should. The mattebox is plastic. I’m actually surprised it has lasted this long.YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/ErikNaso

Anyone know anything about these?

Thinking would be good on primes for general use out of the studio.

Jon, it has less to do with the crop factor of the sensor, and more to do with the diameter of the particular lens you are using, and or the field of view of said lens. For example... Some very wide angle lenses may need larger filter sizes, as well as say a cine lens with a large diameter front, like my Cooke 20-100 zoom where a 4x4 filter tray will show at 20mm.
As far as matte boxes go, there is nothing wrong with getting one of the less expensive Indian or Chinese made units with both 4x4 & 4x5.65 trays. As long as you take care of your gear it should last.
Good Luck!
