OK, so if i am using native 720p clips in my video and its 3 minutes long.... if i use these settings the estimated file size will be way over 500mb which vimeo doesnt except unless your a plus user. BUT nike sb uploaded a full hd debacle skate video which is 24 minutes long in full hd 720, the file size was only around 250mb?

This is correct. Since Youtube creates a second generation copy, you want your source footage to be as high quality as possible. If youtube decides to upgrade their HD quality, they will have a higher quality source to re-encode the video from, as Youtube keeps the original source file for future updates.

1920x1080 is still a valid resolution that you can upload, 4096x2304 is for Red One footage, or other high end digital cinema cameras.

In fact, Youtube is pretty much resolution independant now. You can upload just about whatever you want and it will work.

Everything should be relevant except the 4K part. Most video sharing sites are only accepting HD encodes up to 1280x720. Google just likes to out-do all the other video sharing sites.

What is really crazy is that I was logged in when I didn’t see the 1080p option. I logged out and now I see the option. Can anyone else see the 1080p option for their own videos while logged in? I wonder if it is displaying the 720p or 1080p version when I am logged in? I don’t notice any quality difference so I just assume it is displaying the highest quality version.

Thanks, for helping me out on that one.

EDIT: I went back and checked out the videos while logging in and while logged out. While logged in it is definitely showing me the 1080p version. There are compression artifacts for the 1080p mode. I seem them when I am logged in but I don't see the 720p option. I am still undecided which is better, 720p or 1080p. The 1080p is sharper but it has problems with compression because both are at the same bit rate. You would think that they would bump it up a little for the 1080p option?

Does Vimeo support 1080p streaming? When youtube works correctly it is better. I just can't get it to work correctly yet.

If you right click on a video with the 1080p option it will allow you to display the video statistics in real time(ie: resolution, bit rate, and frame rate). If it does not have the 1080p option then you probably will not see the properties option when you right click either.

I have tried at least a half dozen times to trigger the 1080p option on youtube but it never works. I converted all of these videos to 1920x1080 H.264 files with a program called AVS Video Editor 4. I used PCM audio at 48 Khz stereo.

So is there anything else I can try to get it to trigger the 1080p option? I have also tried encoding to 1080p wmv at an extremely high bit rate. It never shows the 1080p option on my videos.

Does the 1080p option always show up for your videos?

Here are some examples of 1080p or very high quality videos I have found.
