    GH2 720p Slow Motion Samples

This is a video shot with the Panasonic GH2. Almost every clip was shot in 720p @ 60 FPS and then slowed down to 40% in AVS video editor. No frames were interpolated into this video. It is simply slowed down and rendered to 1080p @ 24 FPS. I think it does fairly well even in 720p mode.

Most people try to use 1080i for slow motion and it simply does not work as well as 720p. Once you deinterlace 1080i you actually have less vertical resolution than 720p. De-interlacing is a pain for interpolating frames as well.

I will post another video that interpolates frames into this same video. That will make it twice as long though.

Nice post. I like seeing what the camera can do in all kinds of shooting situations.. 14-140?

Yes 14-140mm in almost every scene. I think the boy doing the climbing dyno is the only one shot with the 20mm pancake.

Looks good. What were the sharpness settings set to? Looks almost a bit over-sharpened.

Very perceptive of you. I set the camera to +2 sharpness and -2 noise reduction. However, you wouldn't notice the in camera sharpness in the original MTS file. I was messing with the sharpness settings in AVS video editor and I accidentally left it on 55% for this video. I don't think it is horribly over sharpened but it is a little too much. I would probably use something like 20%-35% for more natural looking videos. I did want to get well defined subjects in these videos though.

Great vid - i'm curious to know.

Did you shoot this at 80% Speed At 720p, 60fps?

Would FCP or Premier Pro be the same as AVS when you slowed it down.

I shot the video in the 720p @ 60 FPS mode. Nothing was slowed down in camera. I only slowed the footage down to 40% in post processing. It shouldn't matter what program you slow it down in. Just slowing the playback speed down is a lossless process.

However, I made another version of the video at 20% speed with frames interpolated in. This is a lossy process. If you need really slow video then this is your best option. It isn't perfect in all cases though. You can get motion trails in situations where there is a line moving quickly like in the golf and baseball scenes. It worked well in the dunking and climbing scenes though.

Thanks for putting these videos up. I REALLY want a GH2 but by the time I can afford everything I want in addition to it the GH3 will be out LOL

                    Using Twixtor, or something else?

VirtualDub and AVISYNTH. It was complicated to find all of the software and get everything setup correctly. However, after you have done it once it is pretty easy to do. Not sure how useful super slow motion really is though. I tend to like the 720p slowed down to 40% better. The in camera 1080p @ 30 FPS @ 80% speed is another good option.
