Oh, and Sharp showed the photo of its 8K MFT camera. The one Matt and Eric from the Newshooter used two years ago.

      Still in development.

        Anyone remember the Fran 8K?

I remember the Cinematin folks posting here. And then they closed shop and that was it.

Meanwhile the BGH1 box camera (with the guts of a GH5S) has been Netflix-approved. That’s the cheapest camera ($2K) on the list. Required settings listed in this PDF:

the S1H is the cheapest Netflix approved camera. Once you add an EVF, monitor etc. to the BGH1 it will be more expensive.

That would be quite a build-out for the BGH1.

A lot depends on your needs and configuration. We just received two BGH1 bodies for use in a studio, and when I compare the features, convenience and reality of our needs, and include the relative costs of lenses, I'd guess we're saving about 50% over what it would have cost for S1H camera setups.

No, the BGH1 isn't designed for every type of shoot -- but after two days of setup and testing we're extremely happy with our choice!

Not sure it is designed for that way of operating. The value is control over Ethernet remotely in a multicam environment. Or purely remote operation. If you are going to add a monitor etc to hand hold getting a GH5S would be a better deal I think. Also I have GH5 and GH5S and still use Ninja V with both.

Yes, the Ethernet / POE capabilities were one of the deciding factors for us, but also having multiple output options as well as matching time code. It took about a day to get used to not having the viewing screen I have with my GH5s, but now the advantages of the camera are beginning to become obvious, and we're starting to get used to the design (and placement of the extra user buttons on the front.)

All is quiet on the GH6 front, but other manufacturers are announcing new products. Most recently is Sony, which unveiled the A1, a 50-megapixel camera capable of shooting 8K and recording it internally. The cost is a steep US$6,500 (without a lens, I assume). Here is a quote from TechRadar regarding the A1's video capability:

"While the Sony A1's 8K video is shot with 10-bit 4:2:0 bit depth and color sampling, it can also shoot 4K in 10-bit 4:2:2 video internally – and that includes in slo-mo 120p. Pro shooters will also be pleased to hear that it can output 16-bit raw video over its HDMI port, too."

The Sony A1 is expected to ship in March 2021. You can read more about the camera here: https://www.techradar.com/news/sony-...-camera-so-far

I think it’s funny people come to the GH6 thread to talk about other cameras.

                          Oooo, innovation....

Yeah, it's a great camera but the absolute antithesis of what the GH line stand for.

How much resolution does a camera like this need? I'd think 422 or 444 in 4k would be better. Make it 12 bit and that would be even better still. Getting to these specs by going 50mp sensor seems a little too far, you still need big sensor sites to get the better sensitivity and lower noise. A GH6 with a medium format sensor is no longer a GH6.

4/3 was the best-selling mount (21.7%) in Japan this past year --- Matthew Allard, "Micro Four Thirds looks to be far from dead", News Shooter, 02 Feb 2021

The Japanese market is very different than global. First of all, it's very upscale. Second, it's very small-body driven. That's why Olympus holds about a 15% share there, despite having a negligible presence outside of Asia.

In the smartphone industry, the Japanese are also more unto iPhone than even the Americans (close to 60% share vs. 40% in the US). Globally, Apple's share is around 13%.
