R5: 4hrs endurace stills shooting

I wanted to check myself about overheating in shooting stills and ran a 4hrs test. Here's what I did:

R5, RF EF adapter, setting JPG L + RAW, Auto ISO, interval timer 4sec, endless

I shot some photos manually but the interval timer was firing all the time. I had the camera on a strap during a dog walkie and in the house. Mostly it pointed towards to floor. Display was on all the time and AF was hunting heavily. I wanted to stress the camera. From time to time I stopped shooting and switched to video mode to check the remaining shooting time. It was a normal summer day 25°C outside and 23°C in the house.
After I while I put the camera on a windows board in direct sunlight.

1 The camera got warm but shot photos all the time. Overall 3,486 shots. I missed some minutes when I swapped the old LP-E6 for a fully loaded E6NH battery

2 after about 2.5 - 3hrs the time for 4K50p videos started to drop. 15min - 10min - 5min 0 and red overheating. Nevertheless the camera was shooting stills all the time. It showed 29:59 mins in 4K25p

3 I stopped the test after about 4hrs when the second battery died.

For me it is all good. I will order a 2nd backup camera.

I actually finished a 512GB card on still and still ok

However you should not expect to do 8K Video haha

Thanks for the info! If the quality difference between normal 4k (with processing & sharpening) and 4kHQ is not a crucial issue then this camera is a screaming buy. I watched a video of a guy pointing out how close the two modes can be made to look. I would be interested in seeing more as it really takes the heat off the camera, pun intended!

In general I'm okay with the image quality of standard 4K. It matches great to the C300iii.
You just have to consider that you cannot shoot HQ 60/120p or 8K RAW once you have used
the camera for a while. if your script has slomo shots this is sth you have to consider.
Also I found out that playback to check the footage can be challenging. H265 10bit 422 isn't
supported by hardware acceleration in playback and it's almost impossible to review in on a computer
without transcoding.

I did a load of corporate headshots using my R5 on Wednesday. It was a joy to use after using the Sony A7III/A7s etc for the past few years.

I have an assignment next week where I could need 3 cams: overview wide shot and two talking heads. As I have made my decision already and I am not too keen mixing Canon and Panasonic I just ordered the second R5

My dealer said they are constantly delivered by Canon with the cameras but only one or two at once. The rumor that there will be modifications and the next batch will delivered not before October is definitely not true.

There are a lot of people working on ways to extend the 8K record times. One group testing put an R5 in a cooler and swapped CFxpress cards to get 69 minutes of record time. Not practical but an interesting test. So far using an external recorder and removing cards from the camera works the best, but it is limited to 4K 60p and there is no RAW option.
But from I've seen if Canon does add clog3 the 4K HQ video will be about as good as you can expect for this price range. And its a great stills camera.

Seems like there is a fake timer to shutdown 8K recording. It does seems to exist as a user. the test by EOShd.com is very interesting indeed.

I get the same feeling while using mine. It just count down nomatter the ambient is 35degC outside under the sun or 20degC indoor with air condition. and no matter what I try it just cannot reset for a few sec or minutes of use.
The 1DC after 1hr of recording is much hotter than that.
if just for still it just stay luke warm even after a 2 hour session
