    Variable ND ruins focus

I picked up a Cokin variable ND filter the other day. When I started checking it out I noticed it throws everything out of focus. It actually becomes impossible for me to focus the shot because the focus ring on the lens stops before the image can be brought into focus. Oddly, the problem gets worse the more light I allow through the ND filter. I assume there must be some issue with the two pieces of glasses shifting as you rotate the ND filter to adjust how much light gets through. As the filter nears it's darkest things start to come into focus. As soon as I take off the ND filter everything is fine again. I've tried multiple lenses as well, but the effect is always the same.

    Anyone have this problem before?

Sounds like you have a defective filter. I would bring/send that back.
