I'm looking for a 500 or 1000gb external HD to download camera files to on the road. Are there any that I can copy camera files directly to the HD without a laptop?

Michael,
My brother who is a photographer uses hyperdrive for his cards. His was the older model. Try to check if they now support the newer and faster cards as it was his concern with his hyperdrive.
He gave me this link;

Second the Nexto. It's saved my butt numerous times when I've run out of cards, though I'm always waiting for the day it fails... I've had no experience of the Hyperdrive. I also find, for some reason, that it's faster to copy to my computer (admittedly an old one) if I copy to a Nexto first, instead of inserting CF card directly into computer.
One small issue with Nexto drives -- battery won't last long at all...
Also wanted to add that you can get a usable 500gb Nexto for cheaper than $1200. As in more like $200, $250. Look around. The models that back up photos will also back up video -- it's just that you have no way of previewing the files you store. The models that offer no preview whatsoever are even cheaper.
