        To me, having a good mic is the very most important thing, and nothing to skimp on. Next is the first gain stage. Your recorder is adequate. Rather than adding a bunch of boxes or in line barrel things to frankenstein a better signal, I'd recommend just using a mic that gives you a better signal to begin with. Less room for weirdness or problems.
