Watched some ProRes video shot with Filmic Pro and I thought it looked horrible. Crunchy details, really weird hair over processed looking, over sharpened. Still looks like a really cheap quality electronic video camera to me. Even when taking away the high video compression its still overly processed and cheap looking. Fine for everyday stuff and one that wants to get into video production and has zero budget but beyond that I just cannot fathom why any professionals consider this a viable option. My GH4 shoots better 4k than this. I'm not entirely sure ProRes with this over processed video is really a good choice for most users. I doubt they would really gain much of anything except the placebo effect of less compression.

You can stick a McDonalds hamburger on a $100 fancy plate and serve it at a restaurant but its still just a McDonalds hamburger. Its acceptable for what it is but since when did we throw our standards out the window and just accept "Its ok for what it is"? Canon and Panasonic get nitpicked over every tiny detail and we analyze the video with a magnifying glass and scream the sky is falling when something looks less than Alexa quality.

Content is king but so is being able to record a video that isn't plagued by unpredictable random artifacts and over processed details. The only time the iPhone might be considered good enough is if they add ProResRaw. That way all that horrendous image processing can be done in moderation. Only problem is we will all see just how bad that sensor is once we go down that route. It will likely still need over processing in post. I have explored raw stills on the iPhone and its pretty bad. Much more control but you can only do so much with a tiny sensor and tiny set of lenses like this. Even in great lighting the images tend to need a lot of sharpness added and corrections.

Oh yeah? I dunno, people on this site have said things like they don't know anyone who owns a smartphone other than the iphone. anecdotal evidence to be sure, but... what's the consensus of people on this thread? see a lot of galaxies in your day to day? most of the people in my class/culture bracket that I encounter seem to have a cracked iphone

Over three days, I watched the first halves of Liverpool - Man City, Dolphins - Colts, Packers - Steelers and Chargers - Raiders. Plus, the assorted You Tube highlights of a bunch of leagues. That's enough.

It is true though that the novelty of event wears out as one ages. I went to my first "rock" concert in Moscow 45 years ago. It was very exciting.

PS. There was a great scene in the "Longest Day", with the senor officers of the 15th Army enjoying the card game late night June, 5th-early morning June, 6th. When informed of the Allies parachute air drops, the commander-in-chief Generaloberst Hans von Salmuth says something like this, "I am not going to get too excited about this. I am not a spring bunny. I've seen it all before".

Almost all modern phones and computers have good features and performance. The big thing for me is the OS, user interface and user experience.

Android ain't windows. Always been smooth snappy and reliable for me. And my phone never got slowed down intentionally by a firmware update after a new model was released. But I think that a lawsuit may have forced Apple to discontinue that practice

One of the articles or videos I saw last week about the EU possibly forcing everyone to USB-C for phones and other devices said Apple will “lose” millions and millions that they currently get for the licensing of Lightning Bolt cables. And supposedly they(Apple) said that it will cost some ridiculous amount of money to develop/re-design iPhones to accommodate USB-C. USB-C should have been on the iPhone at least one generation again. It’s on their iPad Pro’s and laptops.

what's wrong with android? there's gotta be a minor differentiation in features between an iPhone and a Galaxy. some phones outperform and outspec iPhones in certain regards. I don't have deep knowledge or interest....

windows i agree. and I would use Macs anyway because I'm all in on FCPX. but I've never owned an iphone and hope I never do

what's their market share among working professionals and the top 20% of households by income? I doubt those numbers are available, but I imagine it's way higher. Because ultimately the iphone is a cultural statement/status marker. And conforming to that idea gives them tremendous power to do whatever they want without a bleat from their customers. yes, the design and the features are great and powerful and have often led the pack. But then there's a lot of headspinning ****ery

and their app store has been deemed a monopoly I believe in litigation. of course, that's a monopoly only within the apple universe.

The transfer speed is going to be a rather annoying aspect of the iPhone 13 and ProRes. Its a pile of things like that where the iPhone video seems amazing at first but then the limitations really hinder professionals. I'm also not sure how I feel about ProRes files clogging up iCloud storage. Guess every user will have to upgrade to that 2TB iCloud account now. I also wouldn't want my iPhone attempting to upload an hour long 4k video shot in Prores to iCloud which will take forever.

Nice thing about Filmic Pro is the media recorded doesn't touch iCloud or the photos library on the phone. The phone is still limited to really slow transfer. If one is on set and doesn't have a 1 TB iPhone they are going to have to stop production and wait to offload all that media. Guess all users are just going to have to buy the 1 TB model to avoid that.

Apple sure did give a solid reason for users to buy the 1TB model and upgrade to 2 TB iCloud storage.

Although that's all true, it's irrelevant in your context if people will actually use the phones for professional productions since the phones cost less than one person's meals for a few days, so they will just have multiple phones being used while footage is handled.

It's not like they are limited to one phone per set.

They already have endless control and could have done whatever they wanted for many years and would never go out of business.

Instead we got great computers like M1s when they could have severely limited their own technology and milked, and milked, and milked with never-ending card and chip improvements.
