Panasonic AC90A, lots of new features- and FREE UPGRADE FOR AC90 OWNERS
    Press release from Panasonic:

Owners of Predecessor AG-AC90 Model Eligible for Free Firmware Upgrade to New Features

NEWARK, NJ (June 17, 2014) – Panasonic has announced a new professional AVCCAM® HD handheld camcorder, the AG-AC90A, with significant improvements over its predecessor, the AG-AC90. Advances include two new recording options -- a PM mode (1280x720, 8Mbps) supporting sports analysis applications and a CS mode (720x480, 3.5Mbps) for cloud service utilization.

Other enhancements comprise the ability to copy content from one SD card to another, a date and time superimpose function ideal for law enforcement and legal depositions, Freeze Frame (still picture) on video out during shooting position change, Eye-Fi card support, a Variable White Balance function, additional marker displays, and a Digital Range Stretch (DRS) On/Off user button. Current AC90 owners can access these new features via a free firmware upgrade available at

The AC90A is a full-featured model that establishes new benchmarks for professional entry-level acquisition. Features inherited from the AC90 include a high-quality 3MOS/BSI sensor; a highly-accurate 12X zoom lens with three independent adjustable rings for zoom, focus and iris and wide 29.8mm to 357.6 mm (35mm equivalent) viewing angle; and Panasonic’s exclusive Nano Surface Lens Coating that reduces ghosting and flares. Other key features include two SD Memory Card slots; a five-axis image stabilizer that dramatically improves stabilization for hand-held shooting; 4X pixel shifting technology for a sharper image; and an intelligent Auto (iA) Zoom 25X super-resolution function for automatic adjustments of edge, gradation and detail.

In addition to the new PM and CS modes, the AC90A records in premium PS mode (28 Mbps, 60p only), in PH mode (average 21 Mbps/Max 24Mbps), in HA mode (approx.17 Mbps), in SA mode (approx. 9 Mbps), and in HE mode (approx. 6 Mbps) for extended recordings.

The AC90A is compatible with Panasonic’s ultra high-speed Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card series (in addition to providing SDXC and SDHC card support), with transfer rates of 90MB. The two slots can also be utilized for simultaneous back-up recording.

The AC90A also includes time code/UB recording, two wired remote control terminals (for zoom, focus, iris, REC start/stop controls), and a built-in 5.1 channel surround microphone. Standard professional interfaces encompass an HDMI output, USB 2.0 (mini B-type), Multi-AV output, and a 3.5 mm stereo headphone out.

The camcorder features two locking XLR inputs with switches for mic/line, two RCA audio outputs, and records two channels of Dolby Digital.

For editing or playback, professionals can transfer content by inserting the SD Memory Card into Mac or PC computers or by connecting the camera directly via its USB 2.0 interface. Panasonic’s AVCCAM Importer software, a QuickTime plug-in component that eliminates the need to convert AVCHD files to ProRES422 files before editing in Final Cut Pro, is available as a free download from the company’s web site.

For easy HD viewing, the camcorder is equipped with a widescreen LCOS color viewfinder and a widescreen, 1.15-million pixel 3.5-inch LCD color monitor. The LCD monitor rotates 270 degrees for easy low-angle, high-angle and self-interview shooting.

The AG-AC90A is available at a suggested list price of $2,250. Panasonic supports the AC90A with a three-year limited warranty (one year plus two extra years upon registration).

This is huge. I don't think this has ever happened before, with a Panasonic. I mean, the most I can recall is that the AC160A got a free firmware update that added 1080/60p. But with the AC90, they're adding a ton of new features:

    1. Copying between two slots - you can copy all the files, or just certain files, from one slot to the other.
    2. Freeze Frame function - records a video using only the one still frame, but the live audio will be recorded.
    3. 720p! The AC90 has always been a 1080-only camera (well, 1080 plus standard-def). Now they've added PM mode for 720/60p! Granted, it's a low-bitrate codec (I think it's 8mbps) but -- hey, it's new, it's here, and it's free... the HDMI output won't be 720p though, it'll be either 1080i or 480i, but the recording will be 720p.
    4. CS mode -- a new super-low-bitrate mode, standard-def 480i at only 3.5 megabits
    5. Time stamp! One of the most useful functions for legal videography, and one that was left off of the AC90, is now available on the AC90A (or free upgrade to the AC90)
    6. DRS on/off is now assignable to a user button in addition to being integral in the scene file menu
    7. Variable white balance -- now you can dial in your white balance to the exact K temperature you want, in 100-degree increments, from 2,400 to 9,900 Kelvin.
    8. Safety Zone Marker and Center Marker added. The safety zone can be set for 90% for 16:9, or you can put up guidelines for 4:3, 14:9, 2:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1, and 2.39:1.
    9. The Eye-Fi card support is included.
    10. The color bars are locked out from showing up while you're recording (in case you accidentally pushed the button during recording, for example). You can still record bars, you would just display them before hitting "record". Once you're recording, you can't turn the bars on or off.
    11. Letterbox mode has been modified to ensure that the whole screen shows up on a 4:3 TV.

I think this is the biggest free update to a Panasonic pro camcorder in history. Let's hope this signals a new trend for the company.

    This is awesome!

    Just updated my AC-90

I still can't believe this is a free upgrade! Playing with new features now. I love the user-select WB and now this cam can be viable for legal video (which is what I do a lot of lately).

I would say that I am speechless but based on what I have written that is not entirely accurate

Decent update but if only they have increased the bit rates of all the 1080p modes.

it was disappointing when they didn't give full control of wb in the first update.
happy now, only other thing that would have made me over the moon would be making 720p 15-20 mbps.
better than it was yesterday,so no complaints here.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but my biggest irritation has been not being able to use the LCD and VF simultaneously. This update seems cool though, and definitely appreciated. White balance and safety zone will definitely come in handy for me.

LCD and VF, still not simultaneous.. i don't get it, what is the reason?? few minutes less battery life? with a 'normal' flip out screen it may be doable, but with ac90's slide out system it is IMPOSSIBLE to change your view without moving the camera severely. and looking like an idiot to whoever you are filming. filming outside and a ray of sun comes out? you're lost.
i guess my ac90 will stay largely unused.

I thought the WB was a bit amateur time so dialing in the WB of your choice is a great upgrade

The one thing that would have been great is if there was an option where pre-roll could have been left on as opposed to having to turn it on before each file that you wanted to use it on

My guess is that the issue is more hardware than software related. I might be wrong on that though.
