Let me be honest and blunt, I bought this little accessory hoping it wouldn't suck. Don't take it personal Siniarch,
it is just that I am used to getting little gizmo's and having to throw them away, lol...Then again I had a bit of hope running under the skepticism because this is one of the DVXuser members who always seems to be about to build something really cool and super affordable in comparison to the options already out in the market. I am especially hoping for a release of the shoulder mount he built, hint, hint ![]() The FWS-01 is just a little piece of rubber with two holes in it, one for the tip of a Firewire 400 cable and the other for a headphone jack. It's purpose is to share some of the strength of the phono connection with the weak Firewire 400 connection that we are all terrified of destroying by pulling on the wire while connected to the HVX. Does it work? Well, I LOVE IT!!! But to try to share my childish excitement with you guys I though I'd do something that showed it in pictures... I know it is a bit rudimentary of an test/example but it shows how far my personal level of comfort goes with this thing mounted. While it doesn't make it feel like it is made of concrete I really felt quite comfortable while I took the pics even though the gapher take was a bit on the heavy side, bus the whole cable... I could have added something to it, but it gets the point across if you own an HVX. ESPECIALLY IF YOU USE DVrack! What's not so great about it? I guess the fact that it isn't meant to work with the 1/8 phono pins. But I think he is going to offer one like that, I mean I guess he might this can't be a hard piece to manufacture. "FWS-02" perhaps, lol? Anyway... so if you have 1/8 headphones you have to use your adapter with it which will add a touch of extra length to the connection, but it won't add a significant amount of lever. So unless you have a crappy adapter and that's why you don't want to use your adapter I wouldn't worry about it cause this thing is waaay sturdy! He charges $15 and sells little 1/8 to 1/4 adapters for $2. Not too bad of a price, and it is way worth it. He's got a website going! That could only mean that he will in fact make some of his designs!!! http://firewiresaver.silo23.com/ . ![]() . ![]() I love my new camera, lol

Nice. This is a wonderful idea. I can't find any contact details on his site and would like to ask what he charges to ship to the UK. Is his DVXUser member name Siniarch?
Thanks. |

Wild. So it's leveraging off the "strength" of the 1/8" headphone jack? Interesting.
If there was some way to mold the rubber piece a bit more creatively, I'd suggest he extend it just a bit on the top because there's a screwhole about a half an inch away; if he could mold it such that it was form-fitting around the block and extended over to the screwhole so it could be permanently attached that would be bulletproof. Even so, sounds fantastic for those who are concerned about their FW ports.

I did something very similar recently. Used gaffers tape to bind my headphone jack with firewire cable and it did exactly what this great little mod does. I'll send him my $15 just to support great innovations like that.

I believe he has some sort of engineering background. He got this aluminum piece made for an other of his ideas, but this thing was very intricate, and I think he designed it himself. Well, actually I just looked at it and the screw hole is not vertically aligned with the phono and F400 ports... also it is slightly above the SD card and lens control ports... I don't know if it would work.Anyway, I am just happy that my F400 just got at least twice as strong, probably more!

Hi mark.burton,
Yeah my user name is siniarch. you can PM me here if you like. I'm not sure about shipping to the UK, but like I posted, I didn't make this item to become rich. So if you'd like, just buy one put the address where its going, I'll only charge the usual handling fee for the envelope, lables, bags, etc... and whatever the post office charges me, I'll send you an email and you can send me the extra money on paypal after I've shipped it. Hi Barry, First of all. thanks for all your time, efforts, knowledge, etc... That is a great idea about using a screw hole, but I am a little scared (don't know why) about unscrewing things on my HVX. So I thought, most people would probably have a problem with it. Also it makes the part a little more complicated, and it drives the price up. But its a good idea either way. vbmenu_register("postmenu_931344", true); |

Hey siniarch,
thanks for going out of your way to make this available. Anything in the works for 6-pin firewire strain relief on the FS-100? I haven't had a problem with this connection - but an AC I know well lost 5 hours on a prep sorting out an issue with this - so, well worth the preventative measures. |

No Problem James,
As for the 6 pin firewire saver, I could come up with something. The 6pin is a much stronger connection, but if people are worried about it, I'd be happy to design something. If anyone interested other than James, now would be the time to voice your opinion. And thanks guys for all your comment, ideas, criticism, etc... |
