Exclamation "Broken" Guys New Short Film "Cyn" HVX200 Trailer Under $1000

Hey Everyone,

Well you knew how jealous I was reading all this cool stuff on the HVX200
so I had to go out and shot with it myself. I created the my twisted tale called "CYN."

Check out the trailer: http://www.alittlecyn.com/trailer.html

Cyn is a trimmed down version of a longer script I created for my upcoming feature film project called “Red Princess Blues.”
As I developed the "Princess" short film I noticed that it had less and less in common with my characters and storyline from the feature project.

I created "Cyn" for Steven Speilberg’s “On the Lot” and I had to do it from script to finished product in 6 days.
Done for well under $1000, Cyn brings together an amazing group of talented people. Without these remarkably talented friends and professionals,
Cyn would have never made it's 6 day schedule.

Friday: Write the script and prep the shoot

Saturday: Casting and prep the shoot; also begin working on opening titles & prep visual effects

Sunday: Rehearse, Fight Choreography and Production Design the location

Monday: Shoot day

Tuesday: Editing and color correction; begin scoring process, sound design & visual effects

Wednesday: finish scoring, sound design, composites of visual effects and master output.

Cyn was shot on the Panasonic HVX200 in HD 720p Native using four 8 gig P2 cards. This allowedme to have my assistant editor/cameraman
Ricky Pierre-Louis to download the footage on a Final Cut Pro editing system while still on set. The workflow was amazingly fast and the images were beautiful.
I wanted to give it a very unique look in post so we really pushed the limited of the camera and image.

Let me know what you think about the teaser. The official site is: http://www.alittlecyn.com

And thanks to everyone [Jared and DVXuser] who support and enjoyed the BROKEN DVD. I hope it help some of you out!

For a second there i thought I saw another girl tied to a chair,,, I'll have to go back and look again. Trailer is really vague, and for the most part uninteresting even for a teaser. The picture looks interesting but it's so grainy you could have stayed with the DVX and got the same results. (reminded me of new Miami Vice movie which by the way looks horrible) Why shoot HD if you are just gonna make it look like s*&^.
Anyway those were my first impressions. I hope it rocks all the same.

it upsets me when people don't understand the visual effect grain adds to the mood of a film...

the visual look of this short is fantastic. so is maimi vice. these aren't fantasy films. these are real, gritty works.

awesome job.

Don't be too upset, I'm not. BTW there are many other ways to influence the mood of your film aside from destroying the picture quality.

I say the lightning is super nice! I really liked the "yellowish" images. About the grain, I need to se more and get a feeling of the look. But the clip of the man laughing really shows allot of grain in the skin color, little to much.
I think the teaser is to short to breed an interest. Hope to see a bit longer teaser soon.=)

Thanks everyone for your comments. Grain was added for mood. To give it more of a graphic novel feel. I wanted a very stylized image. The short film is 3:45 min long so a long teaser would pretty much give it away. It is designed to garner interest.

This is just a fun little short I put together in 6 days. All visual effects were done in post (we didn't have time to do it any other way) as well as the color grading.

I was just trying to challenge myself and see what we could pull off in a short amount of time. I am very proad of the final product (that's why I am sharing it with you all) and we'll have some web docs explain how we did a full room explosion as well as the end (James Bond style) title sequence. We love those title sequences

Thanks again and keep the comments coming

Hey man, your new short looks interesting, I'd like to see the whole thing at some point too, as the teaser's really short.

The job of a trailer is to create interest. One of the key things is to give the viewer a feel for the genre the film represents. You don't have to give away the story line - as so often is the lame practice of mainstream studios. Yet, it's surprising just how detailed you have to be about the genre and actually down to sub-genre. The reason is simple. You don't necessarily attract an audience by the story line, but you do when you specify that it's a sci-fi (women won't go - largely - but geeks will), horror, crime etc. - and that's not enough - you gotta specify if it's crime with f.ex. sexual overtones (there's an audience for that, and also an audience that won't go for that).

Again, very important issue: tell us, in an intriguing way what the genre and sub-genre is. By that particular metric, this trailer wasn't successful IMHO.

The rest: look of the footage, soundtrack, special effects etc. are secondary, though not without interest. But always remember first things first.

Everyone has an opinion. I have been editing movie trailers and promotions for 12 years, so I think it does exactly what you speak of. Again that is only my humble opinion.

Thanks for the comments!
