2.22.10.M at 1:12am - THREAD ON DVXUSER.COM
Hi everyone! I'm new here. My first fest. Just eagerly, cautiously and nervously registered. A real newby here, so please be gentle ![]() Looking forward to a great learning experience! 2.23.10.T 11am-8pm - CASTING Casting session in NYC Met a BUNCH of great actors and actresses, and found my Katie, Leo, and Ian! It was one of the best casting experiences EVER, adding to my excitement about this whole process. 2.24.10.W at 4:55pm - LOCATION SCOUTING Went location scouting and found everything I want. Locations and actors officially locked! Optimistic and excited for production! ![]() Working on call sheets. 2.25.10.Th at 12:30pm - SET DRESSING/ WARDROBE I'm glad to have secured my locations because it's snowing like mad outside, and I'd rather not be out and about today. I did some set dressing last night, which I am happy with so far. Working on wardrobe with actors, and going over shot list and story board. Two days before production... I hope this supposed blizzard stops in time for our shoot. Crossing fingers... 2.26.10.F at 1:42pm - LOCATION TEST SHOOT It's still snowing outside - very messy, and there's been lots of disappointing cancellations of all sorts today 'due to inclement weather.' But my cast and crew are still with me, and I remain optimistic as I wait for my DP to meet me in an hour to do some test shooting. ONE DAY BEFORE PRODUCTION! 2.27.10.Sat at 9:28am - SHOOT DAY 1 The snow has stopped. Crew members are arriving in 30 minutes. I feel a bit unprepared, but we have a good amount of time to figure things out as we go. David (DP) and I went over the shot list, storyboard, and the script yesterday; and I feel pretty good about it. Here we go... Let's have some funnnnnnn!!! 6:48pm All the exteriors are done. Dinner break soon, and setting up for the next scene. Things are moving well. My cast and crew are really great. And I'm feeling very optimistic thus far. ![]() 11:14pm That's a wrap for day 1! We've found a great work flow, and we are totally on schedule. One day down, one more to go! 2.28.10.Sun at 8:09am - SHOOT DAY 2 Prepping for day 2. Crew arriving in two hours. Most of my own dialogue scenes are today. My main concern today is being able to get through a cafe scene within the allotted time, which is not much. Hopefully, natural light in the space today would do us some good, so we don't spend too much time lighting. And from what I can tell now, I think it's gonna be a good day. And hopefully, we're getting enough coverage of everything... ha..ha.. ![]() 3.2.10.Tuesday at 2:57am - EDIT DAY 2 I've been a crazy woman for the past 24 hours or so, but things are moving along, and I'm happy. ![]() I had a great time, despite the last minute entry, which left me with very little time and preparation. Everyone on my set was so fantastic!!! Thank you my cast and crew.. !! Filmmaking is such a tedious task, but we all do it because it's just too much fun!! RIGHT??!!! One more scene to edit before I get myself some sleep - then... The daunting task of chopping it down to a meaningful 6 minute film awaits me. But the film to my eyes looks beautiful so far. I'll put up some screen grabs and BTS photos soon. Good luck everyone! This is so much fun! ![]() 10:47pm - ROUGH CUT Exporting my latest 6 minute rough cut. It was fun trying to cut down from a 10 minute rough cut. It's almost like a different movie than intended. But that's what I enjoy about making movies (I speak as if I've done this for many years.. lol). So many people and things have to come together for it to happen. And it's usually never what you exactly expected. Being open to different interpretations and opinions, what actors and cinematographers and other storytellers offer, totally adds to my process and growth as an artist. It's been pretty intense few days for me, but I'm feeling really happy now, rather than feeling a bit apprehensive about this forum and fest. A friend told me to be ready for some real criticisms, and I think I can handle it! (Oh but still. Please be gentle. FIRST FEST... remem? )I'm just happy I got this far and made a movie. And in the process, I've met many talented and delightful people! Anyway, I'm rambling today. I hope everyone gets their movie in on time! I have yet to do some color correcting and polishing, but I think I have something. Still crossing fingers, but I've got me a 6 minute rough cut! YAYYYY!! 3.3.10.W. at 10:54am - TWEAKING I've exported my rough cut to get some feedback. This online debut is making me a bit nervous bc I am literally putting myself out there for open opinions. It's my first time doing that, where feedback is right in your face. Filmmaking is a form of one's artistic expression, but it also by nature includes wanting to please others. In the end, what's the point if no one wants to watch it, right? I do try to stay true to the idea of telling stories I want to tell, and in the way that touches me first. But I definitely believe it's good to get some new perspective at times. So I shall brace myself and enjoy the ride for what it's worth. Now I need to take all the feedback and go do some tweaking... 3:06pm -ROUGH CUT 2 It's funny when you get feedback from people, and what they tell you is exactly what you were thinking but was too lazy to fix - hoping that people would let it slide. lol I think for me, that's why I need feedback. All the little kinks that were getting on my own nerves apparently got on others too. But sometimes it feels too tedious or it's just hard to figure out how to go about fixing them, and that's when other people can help. I love that I have these wonderfully talented people around me to help me along the way. I'm exporting my 2nd rough cut. I think it's better than the last. I guess that's the point. ![]() 11:45pm - CLOSE TO PICTURE LOCK I got some great feedback from David Vollrath and tweaked accordingly. I think I'm very very close to locking my picture, so I can hand it over to Rabb to clean up my sound. I feel really good about it right now. I guess we'll see how I feel after a few hours. ![]() But for now, I'm gonna render, export, and upload to show my people. Hopefully this IS the final cut. Hopefully I didn't make any stupid mistakes. YAYY 3.4.10. Th. at 11:38am - MUSIC & TIMING I randomly feel inspired and act accordingly. And in my past random creative impulses, I seem to have garnered a good amount of material for this festival. Everything and everyone just kinda came together, and I'm quite happy that I am going to be a part of BetrayalFest. Knowing that music can heighten the experience of storytelling in a visual medium, I knew exactly what I wanted when I first thought of the mood of this story. And while I had something that I could use and liked, I was having a hard time trying to place it in the right places. I just knew specific parts that I wanted, but I needed to figure out where to find that void - which also adds to the film. After showing a few trusted friends the rough cuts, I got a lot of constructive feedback from various places, and one of them was about music. YES! I thought - because I wanted someone to notice what was wrong with it. It's a liberating experience in this creative endeavor, when you figure out exactly what's bothering you. Tho I'm sure it'll never satisfy everyone, I am happy to have found what it is that wasn't sitting with me well. For what it is, I think I've found a good solution. And I just feel so lucky to have so many perceptive and talented people around me. Nothing's perfect. And I always try to find beauty in that imperfection. ![]() So here I come....! 3.5.10. Friday at 12:53am - THE FINAL STRETCH: COLOR CORRECTION & SOUND Deadline is here, and I am almost ready. OMF file has been sent over, and colors have been corrected. I just have to decide on a font I like and start exporting. Thanks David V, Rabb, and Moses for being so helpful today. You guys are the best!! 3.5.10. Friday at 10:20pm - COMPRESSION & UPLOAD Spent a lot of time trying to figure out my compression settings and learned a lot. There was a brief period of panic, but I think I'm feeling better now. I'm still waiting for the sound file, but it should be a quick sync and a quick export. I spent all day 'practicing' (lol) so I should be okay... ![]() Thank GOD for the 12 hour padding....!! 3.6.10. Saturday at 1:39am - SUBMISSION UPLOAD The deed has been done. Here we go! Last edited by just2me; 03-05-2010 at 10:37 PM. |

my lovely crew: David Vollrath, Rabb Whitehead, and Erik Kandefer, braving the NYC cold disgruntled director waiting to begin already! Is it really the AC's job to tie DP's shoe laces? :p Erik, our very knowledgeable and proficient multitasker, tying my DIVA DP's shoe laces ;) basically saying.. 'that was great!' ![]() are you guys ready yet....? Last edited by just2me; 03-02-2010 at 08:55 PM. |

Sweet poster!
David Vollrath? I think I know him. If he went to Elon University he shot part of one of my earlier shorts. |
