Another small revolution for Independent filmmaking. The XL-H1, the JVC 250 and the Sony EX can now be viewed in a whole new perspective...
The 160mbps 4:2:2 mpeg2 is superior in quality than HDCAM... Imagine the possibilities... http://www.convergent-design.com/dow...lash%20XDR.pdf EDIT- additional info here- that's were I heard the news. http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=102312

Depending on the quality of the encoder, 160 megabits of 4:2:2 intraframe-only MPEG-2 could indeed be comparable to HDCAM. It records full raster, so that means 33% more data than HDCAM but only about 10% more bandwidth, and it's 4:2:2 instead of 3:1:1 so that's more data too. I don't know if it'll truly match HDCAM (more horizontal information and more chroma information but maybe not enough bandwidth to truly handle it) But either way it should handily beat the pants off XDCAM and HDV, with complete imperviousness to motion artifacts.
Recording direct to compact flash is inexpensive too, and it's hot-swappable. Nice. That's actually a quite interesting box -- thanks for pointing it out!

This looks like a fantastic option. Not exactly a cheap device, but to have a high bit rate, full raster 4:2:2 intraframe, edit-friendly codec as an option is a dream come true for owners of cameras with SDI ports. Recording to CF will be extremely nice too, but most important of all is that it's small and lightweight enough to mount to the camera. THAT'S the thing that makes this device truly production friendly! It can actually trigger record from the firewire input so it effectively works like a Firestore, which means you don't have to think about it and don't need an IT assistant.
Very cool! Last edited by Elton; 09-11-2007 at 05:12 PM. |

BTW, apparently the device will have a 100 mbs Long GOP VBR 4:2:2 mode too. Pretty wild.
It'll also remove pulldown on-the-fly before encoding 24p, (no wasted bandwidth) and do an image flip if needed. Last edited by Elton; 09-15-2007 at 09:00 PM. |
