Default Mtv Style editing

I would like to edit make some edits in my timeline look similiar to how they edit that show on Mtv called CRIBS. It looks like they use a lot of Variable Speed changes or some may call them "Ramps" Is that what they are using to get that effect of shots wizzing by? Sometimes they focus on lets say the kitchen. It looks like they shot a stedicam shot maybe in a half circle or wild pan then in post they speed it up. I also seen certain edits on that show where they make it look like the camera is sitting still but the room is actually spinning! How do you do that? Its not a fast spin, its a little quick edit that they are famous for. I am seeing these type edits in all sorts of productions lately and I would like to learn how to do some. I tried to make an edit using that effect you always see on the CBS show Survivor where they go from normal speed to fast then back to normal. I am sure there are several ways to do this but I took one clip then used my razor blade too and cut the clip in 2 parts, keeping the 1st and last sections at normal speed and sped up the middle section up to 200%. It looked ok but wished it was faster. Can FCP go more than 200% on speed? What are some other ways to achieve that look. Variable speed changes should work too right? I tried that today and I ran into problems. My first section of the clip went from normal to real slow then it sped up to 200% but it never slowed back down. I fooled around with the keyframes but couldn't figure it out. I just wanted to go from normal speed - fast - back to normal speed.

After Effects can do the time effect using "time displacement"... I used it on an mtv spot recently.

From what I can tell from your post, what you are wanting to do can be done within FCP. The key is keyframing (sorry for the pun). I'd suggest grabbing a tutorial somewhere on keyframing and practicing with that first. Once you do, I think you'll see that keyframing the speed of your clips is what you are wanting to do.

I'm not trying to get out of helping you here on keyframing, I'm just not sure I could clearly explain it.

Good luck

PS - Jerry Hofmann's book on FCP is awesome.
