Files Import too Fast into FCP?

Hey,

We've done a number of projects here on the HVX and love it, but a strange problem has just cropped up. Every now and then, we encounter a file on the P2 card that plays back normally on the camera and on the computer via the P2 reader, but when importing to final cut, it plays too fast. Reimporting produces the same problem. The sound plays normally, but the video is too fast. Everything else about the video appears normal, but the properties indicate it has a frame rate of 22.98 instead of 23.97, which is strange.

Some additional details:
Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 on an 8-core mac pro
shot 720p 24pn
imported with AJ-PCS060
files were on one 8gb P2 card, so no spanning. all of the other files imported correctly.

This was not a shot we intended to use anyway, but we would like to solve this before it hits a shot we do want to use!

I have had this same problem. Strange frame rates like 10, 17, etc... Suddenly started happening and I would constistantly get 3 clips per 4gb card that were messed up.

The solution that is at least working for me is to make sure you have the card write protected when you copy the the P2 card to your hard drive, then import P2 from your drive into FCP.

Since I have started doing it this way again I have only had 1 clip that came out at a strange frame rate. With that clip I just re-imported, it took 3 tries but it worked.

Hopefully this works for you. It doubles your import time but seems reliable...Too bad FCP doesn't handle the native files.

It does, you can edit the MXF files directly in FCP, see http://www.dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/

here's the fix. go into the prefs on the p2 capture window. it's a little button you click. un-check the "remove duplicate frames..." box. that does the trick.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I didn't get a chance to try the write protected re-import yet but will from now on. The change in the preferences worked great, though! I reimported that file and now it's clear as day. It was happening for us just about once per card and now it seems to be cleared up.

As for raylight, I don't thint it's right for us in this situation as final cut is very convenient for us to use as-is. I am thinking about getting raylight privately, though. I edit on PC at home and I just finished a project in avid, but really hated the workflow, so I'm thinking of going back to premiere w/ raylight.
