Hi, just joined so I could comment on this interesting thread. I recently began using an anamorph with my HV20.

The blurring at the edges which has been noted is possibly lateral chromatic aberration; at least that is what I am seeing. Also, barrel distortion.

Fortunately, I found a way to remove these defects using After Effects. Basically, you split the video into red, green and blue channels and apply the Optics Compensation effect to each channel to allign them, then recombine them. The effect can also be applied to all channels to remove (or nearly so) the barrel distortion.

And yes, I can confirm that resolution is superior to cropping.

I haven't posted enough to upload anything yet, but here are some links:

Brick wall without anamorph and cropped:

    With anamorph and stretched:

    Observations:

    1. The anamorphic lens gives more detail than cropping. Look closely at the bricks.
    2. There is significant barrel distortion with the anamorphic lens. This may be exaggerated because I was fairly close to the brick wall. Also, the many straight lines provide a worst-case scenario for barrel distortion.
    3. In addition, there is noticable chromatic aberration at the left and right edges.
    4. Finally, there is a slight warming effect given by the lens.

Here's the brick wall corrected with the technique I described previously:
