Coming from the film world i've always had my effects done by either a title house or in video I've always did my onlines with an Avid operator.

But I'll be getting more into onlining at home. So any books, guides, dvd's, etc, that help in doing blurs, white flashes, etc. in Final Cut or even taking it into AE would be helpful?

this place has some good books. Motion Graphics by Kevin Monahan is pretty good.. a few steps beyond "basic." , though there are some small errors in the book. It does not have anything about "white flashes" but lots of toher stuff. ( that can be "scrubs flash" I think it "Eureka" has one o r you can make it yourself.

as for effect? google --final cut plugins
I'm sure you will find a lot.
