I'll be knocking on the RED offices on January 1st at 12:00 trying to see if I can New Years Smooch™ Spike.

    Maybe.

thanks Charles and Mikko for the feedback about the plates.. learned a few things there. Adapter plates seem like the logical way, maybe with a Red supplied bench riser.

Yeah, I gota scree with Charles. 2 screws does trump 4.

Though if the camera could always have the Steadicam dovetail installed durign a shoot, and then only the Tripod late needed to be switched out. That's one less plate to attach.

Plus if you used a Cat Griller (http://www.baer-bel.de/deutsch/produkte/produkte17.htm [for others than CP]) for your tripod you could mount the RED with nothind more than the RED-tail. Though again a dovetail would still be 2 less screws initily. But there is a height & weight difference there still.

Besides, if RED can get those dovetial peices to mount tools-free, then it beats out the screws

Also of note; the Flyer needs a gear on the dovetail plate, so this wouldn't work with a built in dovetail on RED. And this is where the weight savings would be most critical.

    - Mikko ... isn't quite sure what's the best solution after all this, but thinks that less parts is cooler.

I think it's important to have a way to attach video rods even when the Red Rail is not attached (As in steadi-cam) You will need something very lightweight, just to hold a mattebox and focus motor.
Some thing like this...From the site mikko sugested above.
