Should have been installed with your Final Cut Pro installation.

The DVCPRO HD codec is installed with FCP. That's kind of what I thought when you indicated that you could not play back the material. So, in order for QT Pro to play it back, you must have installed FCP which will in turn install the codec in your QT components folder.

    Thanks Ned,

How about a different question then...
The director would like to view footage on his computer (older mac lap top without final cut HD). What do I need to do to get him viewable quicktime files?
    Thanks again,
    Jennifer.

Jennifer, the underlying problem is that you must have the DVCProHD codec on the director's computer. Apple has chosen to distribute these as part of the pro-apps (FCP) installation, not as QT resources (which for my 2 cents would make more sense).

So, for anyone to play HD-QT files they must have the codec on their computer. Imagine offers a .dmg installer to assist in copying just the codecs from a FCP 5 installer CD.

Another alternative I suppose is to change the format of the QT file to something that doesn't require the HD codec (eg. DV, H264, etc, etc). Only the DVCProHD codecs are the ones *not* included in generic QT installations.

    Hope this helps.

I am unsure if this works, but I have been researching this myself, trying to get a g3 laptop to play dvcpro hd material just for viewing. It can't because I believe Alti-Vec is tied to this compression (so you need G4 or better). BUT I did find this, and since I don't have a g4 or higher computer that I can test this on that doesn't have Final Cut, maybe someone else will.

It says install FCP, but don't do it and see. This seems to me to be the Quicktime components for DVCPRO HD, but perhaps not. Someone check it out.

Copy the DVCPROHD Codecs from /Library/QuickTime to the same folder on your other machine, then restart it.
