Studio Exchange in Burbank offers the HVX on Ebay with a Buy it Now of $4995. Since they are an authorized Panasonic dealer, you get the book and 8 mb P2 card. Mine should arrive tomorrow, I will post immediately if anything is awry. I checked them out pretty thoroughly before ordering and they seem OK.

    I've dealt with Spec-comm -- they are top-notch.

And a great battery doesn't cost that much:

Anyway, convenience and comfort are worth whatever you're willing to pay.

I just recieved my camera and 2 free batteries from Spec-comm today. They were very helpful and speedy. Not many places will give you free shipping and get it to you 2 days after you placed the order.

Note: an unauthorized dealer does not necessarily mean a scam shop, although all scam shops are inherently unauthorized dealers. Some good companies are on the unauthorized dealer list, but some very bad "Crooklyn" scam shops are on there too. For U.S. customers, buying from an authorized dealer ensures that you will get the full manufacturer's warranty, as well as the free "Magic Bullet Editors" software and the DVX Book/DVD, and any rebates and special promotions.

If you buy from a non-authorized dealer, you may or may not get the manufacturer's warranty. *If your box does not include the "Magic Bullet For Editors" software or the DVX Book/DVD, you *will not* have a US warranty, and you will *not* be eligible for the rebate. And if you buy from a "scam shop" you'll be lucky if you get anything at all other than a headache and the knowledge that you've willingly given your credit card number to a "business" that makes a regular habit out of lying to and cheating its customers.

And for those who are still tempted, who they'll save a few bucks by going with the non-authorized reseller, we recommend you check out a few sites:

http://www.resellerratings.com - here you can read reviews on the aforementioned stores, and decide if they're really the kind of place you want to spend your money,

    and

http://www.panix.com/~donwiss/pictures/BrooklynStores - here you can see pictures of the storefronts for some of these places, and *really* decide if they're the kind of store you want to send money to.

Which Dealers Are the "Authorized" Ones?

I did check on the Panasonic site, but they only listed companies like Best Buy and Sears etc. Are these the only authorized dealers? The importance to me is that I'm going to buy the HVX 200 before Dec. 31st to get the free P2 card so it has to be from an authorized dealer. I'm in LA and would like to avoid the sales tax if possible. I was looking at B&H in NY which is selling a few hundred dollars cheaper than the list price. Any ideas? Or do you guys know where I can confirm who's authorized or not? I don't want to miss out on the deal.

I do appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond and help me out here. So if you can help, please do. Thanks.

Profeel is not an authorized dealer.

If getting a $1200 P2 card for free is important to you, I'd recommend only buying from an authorized dealer, as that will guarantee you get everything you're entitled to. Profeel isn't authorized. They may be reselling cameras that were bought from an authorized dealer, which means they may actually qualify for the free card, but -- do you really want to take that chance?

Hi, I just bought an HVX200 at Samy's in Venice for $4999. They are an authorized dealer. Kenji at Samy's was very helpful, and he worked with me on some other gear as well.

It's the Pro Video/Edit department, so they're only open during the week. M-F, 9-6. If you're in LA, they're worth a visit.

    - Pear
