If Panasonic wanted it to be included with quicktime (even on the Mac) I think Apple would include it in Quicktime Pro - right now it's only included with Final Cut Pro.

Well, this may work with raw P2 files, but I'm not sure if it will work with with 1080P stuff in AVID HD yet.

Half this thread was stupid trolling bullpoo-poo and has been deleted.
Now -- back to the subject at hand. Clearly Apple must deliver a Quicktime DVCPRO-HD codec. That's the problem. QuickTime is meant to be a cross-platform playback system.

there's no DVCproHD support in QT for PC? that blows... it's all gonna change soonI bet. gonna be a tumultuous year for formats. Hopefully we are near seeing the end of our good friend DV-NTSC

That is correct, Apple doesn't yet provide QT DV100 support. Hopefully MWSF will bring an update?

Barry,
I think that's a slight misstatement that Apple does not support DV100 in QT. Apple fully supports it as an authoring environment. Folks who can't view DV100 also can't edit in it. Those who can view it, can edit with it. Apple won't offer DV100 support for the player side of things because no one distributes in DV100 except rather closed communities of content producers (like this one) and even now we see the pleas for hosting and bandwidth issues.
That's why Apple offers many, many codecs on the authoring that are not available on the "viewing" side unless one has also installed the corresponding authoring environment. This is true of Windows as well and I suspect it will remain so for some time--there's no demand for it on the delivery/distribution side.
Now, it's quite easy to drag the DV100 "component" into your QT library on ANY Mac and play the DV100 (sans authoring environment) and one wishes apple would make it freely downloadable, but it's quite likely that Apple execs never expected folks to pass around DV100 footage as we have here and so have never made it available. Of course, once you have it, you can capture and edit DV100 in QT Pro...for $29, so perhaps that's why they don't just make it freely available.
As QT is an architecture, one could also write a DV100 component....Panasonic or another vested interest could deploy the resources to (a) persuade Apple release their component to the public as a standalone or (b) write their own DV100 component.
Now, I think it's proper to burn Apple for not including the component in iMovie HD and Final Cut Express HD, neither of which allow more than AIC HDV basically. Until the 200, no one editing DV100 was looking to edit it with a $50 app.
