I would suppose that since humans are considered (by humans) to be the most advanced species we know of, that such engineers view replicating human-like characteristics as the ultimate challenge.
Then again, maybe they're just amusing themselves.
Of course, Disneyland has had an animated Abraham Lincoln chatting it up with tourists for many decades.Practice safe filmmaking; use a concept.

I wish I had a couple of these for my sci fi movie. except they wouldnt be dancing.
I was watching the movie and the whole time I wanted the 2 in the front to start fighting... never happened.
