    tape stock for HVX?
    #1
    Question
I was wondering if any knows if we can use the same tape stock in the HVX as in the DVX100a(MQ tapes)?
I searched this topic in the HVX200 forum but did not see anything about it.
    thank you!

My guess, and it is only that, is it will use the same mini DV tape.
Sony EX3, Panasonic DVX 100, SG Blade, MacBookPro intel.

A mini-DV tape can be used in mini-DV camera or deck. Seems logical doesn't it?

Actually, Panasonic tapes use a "dry" lubricant and should be used with the DVX. You shouldn't mix in tapes from other manufacturers like Sony that use a "wet" lubricant because it can gum up the heads.

    Anyone want to clarify?

I've always used Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tapes with my DVX100A, and never had a problem of any kind. I would guess these same tapes should be good for use in the HVX.

With my Sony and JVC cameras that used the DV format, I've always used Sony Premium DVM60PRL tapes, and I've had no problems at all.

With my higher-end broadcast cameras, I've always picked a good brand of tape and stayed with that same brand of tape throughout the life of the cameras. If you find a camera/tape combination that is hit-free and the heads don't clog easily, it's probably a good idea to stick with that combo, rather than introduce a bunch of different manufacturer's tapes to your heads.

I use different kinds of tape all the time, no worries.
The way I see it there are two options:
1 use one brand/type of tape all the time
2 use everyting you can get and don't use one brand too long in a row
I've only had drops on tapes that were being used like the twentieth time so...

Is it even a good idea to reuse tapes more than 3 or 4 times? I've noticed dropouts on a few of my panasonic tapes if i reuse them more than twice. I think the safe bet is to always use fresh stock when you can? Or is there some kind of standard for the number of times you can reuse mini dv stock?

Generally it's always better to use fresh tape stock whenever possible. And (as was stated a couple of times) the most important issue with tape stock is primarily sticking with one type due to the lubricant issue.
