I went through the same thing when I took up the drum set in college. Even a medium-priced one was $2,000, which was what I paid for my car (a well-used one, of course).

You can pay hundreds of dollars for just a pedal:

--- although most are not that much. Or for what essentially amounts to a metal disc:

--- albeit a finely tuned one. That doesn't include the stand. You can get a decent one for around $100, I think, but you can pay more if you want:

My drum set was only $500, but the cymbals were tinny, and the stands were flimsy.

My first car loan was less than my first camera loan. And coincidentally(ironically?), the camera loan and subsequent camera was the whole reason I had to get a "car loan", because I needed something bigger and easier to work out of than an RX-7. Lol.

And it's also the reason I will never ever buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee(or Jeep anything), again. Besides being a POS, the value plummeted like a lead bar in a swimming pool. That Jeep was the ONLY vehicle I have ever been upside-down on. And that was even buying it used(someone else took the depreciation hit, or so I thought) and being at least a year or more ahead on the payments on only a 4-year loan.

20 years ago when I was living with another Steadicam operator, we used to joke about using the cost of an average Steadicam cable ($175) as a yardstick to measure all other expenses. "Got a good deal on a flight back east, only two cables!" "That date last night cost me half a cable". I think the line item in my insurance inventory for cables is something like $4K.

Matt - awesome! I have the 560 in the garage ready to go for spring. Can’t wait to get smoking! Since they’re virtually the same machine but mine smaller, any key starter tips?

Keep it clean.

Flare ups are somewhat common with it. More than with my Traeger. By far the best brisket and ribs I've made, however.

There are some good facebook groups for the smoker.

I did the firebox, manifold cover and water pan mods and am very happy with them.
