I know the 90d shuts down live view when you are not recording and I don’t mind that, I just wish it would stay on longer when I am trying to set exposure and focus. Is that possible? I could figure that out yet.

It's in the menu...it's a power-saving mode called "Auto Power Off".
The default is usually 1-3-5 minutes, something like that.
Change it to "Off" or "Never", whatever it says.
